"Where is the talent in housekeeping?” asks Sareena Kochar, Senior VP, Housekeeping, Lemon Tree Hotels
SOHO (Syndicate of Housekeeping Professionals)
Hospitality's Best Kept Secret.
With new hotel chains expanding room inventory across India, the question arises - How do we fill these new positions, and are we prepared to meet this growing demand?
According to Sareena Kochar, Senior Vice President, Housekeeping at Lemon Tree Hotels, industry leaders must proactively address the talent shortage by encouraging more people to join the hospitality sector.
Kochar highlights the urgent need to attract more people to the hospitality sector and offers practical solutions to address the talent gap. She advocates for hotels to implement structured training programs for beginners, combining classroom learning with on-the-job experience.
She also stresses the importance of recruiting talent from tier-2 and tier-3 cities through the ‘Hunar Se Rozgar’ scheme and ensuring that recruits are certified by India’s Skill Council to maintain high industry standards.
Additionally, Kochar recommends collaborating with government schools to raise awareness about career opportunities, inspiring the next generation to consider hospitality as a rewarding profession. Together, these initiatives can create a robust pipeline of skilled professionals, ensuring long-term growth and sustainability in the sector.

By recognizing the value of Housekeeping staff and providing competitive compensation, we can attract and retain top talent. Only then can training and development initiatives have a lasting impact, breaking the cycle of turnover and empowering our team to deliver exceptional results.

While other department leaders receive substantial hikes, Housekeeping rarely gets the same consideration, making it one of the most thankless yet essential functions in hospitality.
