Oh, but wait!?Not all traffic converts into sales!
- Upon landing at Amazon.com, many visitors choose to get redirected. To their local Amazon site.
- Many visit Amazon.com only to compare prices. But end up buying locally. Ultimately.
- Many visit Amazon.com to buy an automatic coffeemaker. For their niece studying abroad. Or a board game for their grandson living overseas. Surely that shouldn't count?
And yet here's the bottom line ...
- Amazon has webstores in 20 countries around the world. But ships to customers in over 100 countries. Across five continents. Clearly a lot of this is cross-border.
- The Amazon Singapore home page, for example, features deals specifically from Amazon US. And Amazon Japan. As well as an International Store.
- Amazon.com itself has a Global Store Landing Page. Where you can browse 12 million product listings in Amazon’s websites around the world. Without leaving Amazon.com.
So when would you buy from an overseas Amazon??
- When your local Amazon doesn't carry your favourite brand of Bluetooth stereo earphones. Or your XXXL size golf polo shirt. Or the 60 lb latex exercise band. With 2367 reviews. Or the neon purple colour sports watch you saw. In an ad last week. And your country Customs haven't restricted their import.
- When you're saving a boatload. Versus buying locally. After you've included DHL Express or UPS shipping fee. And looked up the dollar exchange rate, of course. And added Amazon's Import Fees Deposit. If any. And still not fallen off your chair.
- When you prefer a longer return or exchange window. Amazon.com generously accepts returns up to 30 days after delivery. Even in 'change of mind' cases. Often with free return shipping. Amazon Singapore 15 days. Amazon India 7-10 days. For most item categories.
And when would you buy from your local Amazon?
- When you need fresh produce or groceries. Like frozen peas. Or chilled strawberries. Or eggs.
- When you're looking for a tech gadget. After all, funny-looking electric plugs and their voltages can be a nasty surprise. And you want to be sure your 16-outlet surge protector has a safety certification. In your country. Or that your telecom regulatory authority has approved the frequency spectrum. For your quad-band WiFi router.
- When your order is urgent. Or last minute. Remember the year you forgot your bestie's birthday? Or Valentine's Day? Ouch! Happens to the best of us. :) Ordering locally with same-day delivery can be a life-saver.
- When you prefer cash on delivery. Or a local payment mode. Like PayNow in Singapore. Or UPI in India. Or even a Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) or instalment plan. Like Atome in Singapore. Or Amazon Pay Later EMI in India.
- When your appliance is high-ticket. Your $2499 convection microwave oven should qualify for local warranty repair, shouldn't it?
Take a bow, Amazon! 2022 revenue USD 514 bill. 200 million Prime members. Earth's most customer-centric company. For a reason.
