Where Our Violence Prevention and Self-Defense Certification Differs From Others
Chris Roberts
Experienced Strategist & Director | SAFE Violence Prevention & Self Defence
When it comes to self-defence training, many programs center on the physical abilities of instructors, and there is an extended, gruelling physical test at the end. I know I have participated in some of them, and proud of how I survived in some cases.
That is fine if the certification is designed for that purpose. The issue is if the certification is meant to be taught to the instructor's clients. Not all clients, but in my case, my business, SAFE Violence Prevention & Self Defence, has specialized in teaching those deemed most vulnerable. The majority of SAFE clients want a foundation of safety education with no intention of training on an ongoing basis.
This is one of the primary reasons our certification is developed around the needs of our clients and their abilities, which are different from what the instructor can do.

Our program doesn't demonstrate strength or athleticism or what I can do. It starts and always has for 30 years on teaching people how to identify and avoid violence in their daily lives. We recognize that most people in at-risk populations—women, children, seniors, and people with physical limitations—have no intention of becoming experts or masters of self-defence.
Almost all of our clients expect us to focus on physical training but are surprised by how much more important it is to develop the knowledge and strategies to avoid violence at all costs. This is not to say we don't focus on physical principles and concepts, but it is the last step.
In fact, I can't tell you how often clients have asked me if they could keep the discussion to the preventative issues, not realizing their importance and how interesting the conversations can be. Every single client I have had shares stories, from simple ones of experiencing fear getting on an elevator to some horrific stories of abuse they faced for years and years.
This is why I have always maintained that my clients have shaped the curriculum rather than me teaching what I can do. Over the past thirty years, I have often deleted, added, or changed something in the training if I see most clients struggling with it or just not thinking of it.

A straightforward example is confidence. Many instructors teach clients to walk confidently, which sounds great, but what if some of your clients are not confident? Your job as an instructor is to identify these cues, even if the clients don't mention them. As I often say, you are not teaching a group of 20 people but rather 20 individuals with vast differences between many of them.

Our certification program can frustrate instructors with years of experience, particularly those who have put the focus on physical instruction, with them often telling me, "I feel guilty for teaching what I taught now that I have participated in this certification." As I pointed out, I have also been in the situation, but keeping an open mind and wanting the best for those who need our services has brought us together n w. One should only be frustrated with oneself when they feel they know it all and thinks they know exactly what one's clients need when they have never really listened to their client's life stories and experiences.
When it comes to physical training, with little time, it is a waste of time and value to focus on many strikes and reactions to attacks requiring memorization. If one wants to continue training, excellent, but never expect it. This is why I have not perfected but put together a framework of curriculum that meets the needs of the everyday person wanting to navigate daily life safely.
At SAFE Violence Prevention & Self-Defense, we believe everyone deserves to feel safe and empowered. Our 30 years of experience teaching violence prevention have shown us that practical, teachable skills are the most effective way to protect vulnerable individuals. With our certification, you're not just learning how to defend yourself—you're learning how to truly help others stay safe.
