STARRING ROLE: Hotels with Michelin Starred Restaurants
Just eight months after opening, La Dame de Pic at Ten Trinity Square, the first Four Seasons to open in the City, gained a Michelin star. Anne-Sophie Pic’s exquisite French restaurant is the place to impress but the hotel also houses Asian restaurant Mei Ume and the all-day Rotunda - with a grand piano for live music Thursdays to Saturdays. In Shoreditch, the Michelin-starred Angler restaurant celebrates British seafood at the South Place Hotel while the rooftop terrace promises ‘a little piece of Provence’. With the Chop House and speakeasy Le Chiffre, the first hotel from D&D London - known for Bluebird Chelsea, Aster Victoria and 100 Wardour Street - has no shortage of areas for entertaining. Topping the list though is The Connaught, home to Hélène Darroze’s triumphant two Michelin-starred restaurant.
Rosewood Hotel London’s plush Scarfes Bar serves experimental cocktails and sultry live jazz
STATELY STYLE: Grand Hotels with Discreet Bars
Ultra stylish, The Connaught is what Mayfair is all about. The award-winning Connaught Bar, designed by the late David Collins, and the more intimate Coburg Bar are available for walk-ins. Book the Champagne Room if you’ve got something to celebrate. Meet and eat at Jean-Georges, an informal gourmet dining room, or make a lasting impression and dine at Hélène Darroze. At The Beaumont, the first hotel from Corbin & King - who own The Wolseley, The Delaunay and Fischer’s among others - the American Bar and The Colony Grill Room are the place to find old world luxury still alive. In Holborn, everything about Rosewood London oozes luxury and its on-site bars and restaurants are no different. The Martin Brudnizki-designed Scarfes Bar leads the way with its plush decor - velvet armchairs and a roaring log fire - sophisticated cocktails and sultry live jazz sessions. The vast Holborn Dining Room serves classic British dishes in grand, retro surroundings while the Mirror Room offers a relaxed yet luxury dining experience. Protégé of renowned chef Alain Ducasse, Alexandre Nicolas takes the helm of Rivea at Bulgari London. Located in the basement of the Knightsbridge hotel - whose trademark is traditional luxe with wooden panelling and plush chairs - the restaurant takes inspiration from Ducasse’s time in Italy and Provence to recreate the flavours and colours of the Riviera. Bringing together food by Marcus Wareing and an opulent Victorian backdrop, the Gilbert Scott, found within the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel in Kings Cross, is a destination in itself. For equally impressive surroundings, visit the hotel’s Booking Office Bar & Restaurant, where you can sip on Victorian-inspired cocktails under grand vaulted ceilings and gothic arches, or MI + ME, which overlooks the vast St Pancras Station.
Dine in style at the chandelier-lit Berners Tavern at the London Edition hotel
WORLD’S BEST BARS: Award Winning Hotel Bars
This month, the American Bar at The Savoy, under the stewardship of Erik Lorincz and Declan McGurk, scooped up first place in the World’s 50 Best Bars in 2017 while Dandelyan, found on the ground floor of Mondrian London, came in second. Occupying the landmark Sea Containers House, overlooking the Thames, and boasting interiors by Tom Dixon’s Design Research Studio, the hotel’s bar was also named the World’s Best Cocktail Bar and Best International Hotel Bar at this year’s Spirited Awards. Dandelyan may have won the awards but for cocktails with a view, live music and DJs, head to the top floor Rumpus Room.
The split-level bar in Nobu Hotel Shoreditch is the place to meet before sampling the restaurant’s signature black miso cod
NO SUITS ALLOWED: Smart but Casual
One of the hottest hotels in town, Andre Balazs’ luxury Chiltern Firehouse has a bar with the best seats in the house. The drinks are great, the menu by Nuno Mendes is brilliant and you don’t have to book months in advance to get in. Run by the team behind the Experimental Cocktail Club, the stylish Henrietta Hotel is another hotel that puts drinking and eating at the forefront. While you’re there, sample the work of Michelin-starred chef Ollie Dabbous in the hotel’s eponymous restaurant. Heading east, Nobu Shoreditch combines dinner with dance music with DJs playing at just the right volume in its 240-seat dining room. Given it’s co-owned by sushi master chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa, it’s no surprise the restaurant serves the finest raw fish money can buy. The sublime, split-level courtyard bar is the place to meet before sampling the signature black miso cod. For a hipster vibe that’s worthy of its Bethnal Green neighbourhood, head to the Town Hall Hotel, where you can explore modernist food trends in the Jason Atherton-backed Typing Room and sample experimental cocktails in the industrial chic Peg + Patriot.
The Ned Hotel has six restaurants and a bar open to all in a re-purposed former banking hall
NON MEMBERS ALLOWED: Clubs Democratised
At these clubs you don’t have to be a member for some of the cachét to rub off on you. Michael Achenbaum’s The Curtain, newly opened in 2017 and a stone’s throw away from Nick Jones’s Shoreditch House, has a members’ club attached to the £70 million hotel but anyone can stay there. Marcus Samuelsson’s Red Rooster restaurant and adjacent taqueria bar are the most accessible areas of the hotel, which boasts a ballroom for 200. Not just reserved for members, The Ned, the new City hotel from the Soho House group, has six restaurants and a bar open to all in a beautifully repurposed former banking hall separated by 92 striking green verdite columns.
La Dame de Pic, at the Ten Trinity Square hotel, earned a Michelin star eight months after opening
DESIGN FINDS: By Norman Foster & Sir Terence Conran
The uber cool Foster + Partners-designed ME London serves up stylish Ibiza vibes at its ground-floor modern steak restaurant, STK. Settle into one of the white leather booths and feast on your chosen cut of USDA prime beef with a side of lobster tail and parmesan truffle fries before partying the night away with the help of late-night DJ sets. Alternatively, head upstairs to the exclusive Radio Rooftop Bar, where you can join the well-heeled crowd in admiring panoramic views across London. With Ham Yard Hotel, Tim and Kit Kemp, famous for the eye catching design of their Firmdale hotels, created a new public square and courtyard garden three years ago when they built the Soho based hotel from the ground up on a previously deserted plot. It’s now the perfect spot for al fresco entertaining. Inside, as well as the long main bar and restaurant, is a brightly coloured bowling alley and double height Dive Bar. Book a hotel room to access the rooftop garden, buzzing with bee hives. Also in Soho, with its extraordinary art display and ornate, chandelier-lit interior, Berners Tavern - led by Michelin-starred chef Jason Atherton - is the best bit about The London Edition, which announced the return of the godfather of boutique, Ian Schrager, in 2013. Sir Terence Conran, the man behind the new Design Museum, is responsible for Boundary, a long standing staple of Shoreditch. Entertain at French restaurant Tratra, the adjoining wine bar, also open to non-diners, or the rooftop terrace.
Both Hoxton hotels have large lobbies that are perfect for remote working
FIT FOR MILLENNIALS: Working in Style
Inviting guests to ‘sleep, eat, work and play’, The Hoxton group are pioneers in the remote working movement and both the Hoxton Shoreditch and Hoxton Holborn boast large, welcoming lobbies that are open to both guests and daytime visitors for meetings, coffee and cocktails. A similar vibe and service can also be found at the nearby Ace Hotel. While the lobbies may be the initial draw, all three hotels have trendy destination bars and restaurants that further add to their appeal. Right next door to ExCeL, the striking Good Hotel London encourages local people and freelancers to make use of its open plan ‘living room’. Filling the entire ground floor, the space is cosy in some areas yet spacious in others, making it ideal for both solo workers and group meetings. At the end of the day, head up to the rooftop for post-work cocktails.
The Good Hotel is the best place to meet and work minutes away from London Excel.
