Where is Maslow when you need him?

We have all undertaken some sort of human behavior studies in the course of our studies or professional development. Invariably everyone comes across Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Since first published Maslow's theory has been readily accepted by behaviorists as fundamentally true. Is this still the case and how does it apply to our lives today?

I wonder now whether the rapid change in communications and technology is so fundamentally changing the human community that the Hierarchy of Needs is now in a permanent state of flux.

One look at places globally where, for whatever reason, humanity's biological needs (such as food or shelter) are at risk it is clear that a hierarchy of needs still exists. However my thinking now extends to rapid communication technology and the way that the 'need' to be on call either for work or play may now form part of our basic psychological needs?

This applies to all facets of life, but I have observed that the workplace magnifies this new behavioral order. Connectivity and rapid response is not only an expectation from a professional perspective, but also from a personal perspective. We can't seem to find a way to set aside the smartphone for one moment. As a manager what should my expectations be regarding the mix of personal and professional communication. Should I be concerned at all about it??

My principal focus is how can I ensure my colleagues feel motivated and empowered to be successful in their tasks which combine to make us successful in our corporate objectives.

Is the new world order now that instant communication is a tier 1 need that Abraham Maslow did not foresee??

If I find Maslow for you Paul I will let you know, but even I don't think that Maslow could work a way out of this mess for us....
