Where is the leadership pointing?

Where is the leadership pointing?

First Monday of the month = L&D Monday

Very few organisations are satisfied with where they are, and any leadership team worth its salt will have a vision of where they want to be instead.

They will promote their vision with passion and enlist people in achieving it. If they do this well, people will want to follow; they will want to engage with the vision and be a part of the journey towards a better future.

If an employee wants to participate and contribute, they will do what they need to do to get involved. They will find out what they need to find out; they will put in the time and effort. They will learn what they need to learn so their contribution to achieving the vision can be effective and meaningful.

Adults tend to be goal-oriented learners, so if they have a goal, they will learn what they need to pursue that goal. This is why leadership is so important for learning in an organisation. It's not that the leaders must espouse learning, although that is helpful. It is that they give people a yearning for better things.

The opposite is also true. If leadership is poor and there is no unifying and inspiring vision, employees accept the status quo, which in turn does not require them to stretch and learn or do anything differently.

As usual Paul. Great advice. Many managers sadly don't respect their role as mentors, coaches and trainers. Nor do they monitor and assist trainees while they are in training or after they return.
