Today’s Diwali lunch was a humbling experience – not at a restaurant or home, but at my beloved Didi's house-cum-shop. It was not a usual lavish festive gathering, but it was a cozy space brimming with warmth, humility, and generosity that filled every corner. This space, barely the size of a small hall, was divided into her shop and one-room home. The sheer contrast between the physical space and the vastness of Didi's heart was striking. It was a space of compassion and love, transcending the material. I reached on time and Didi was busy preparing for the festivities, making beautiful marigold flower garlands to decorate her place. She was looking radiant in the green Mysore saree I had brought for her last month, its vibrant color and traditional patterns matching her inner beauty. As she worked on the decorations, her daughter-in-law brought me a delightful meal, lovingly prepared by Didi. The plate had golden, fluffy pooris along with the flavorful spicy sabzi. A bowl of cool, creamy dahi complemented the food beautifully. The first bite filled me with freshness and savory taste. Each bite was a celebration of traditional flavors, soaked in Didi's love. Alongside this hearty meal, I was served an array of sweets: rice flour ladoo, and shakkar para, with gujiya. These sweets were more than just sweet treats - they were infused with her love and warmth, made with care, and reflected her genuine nature.
What truly warms my heart is Didi’s capacity for love. She lovingly takes care of her brother-in-law's children, treating them as her own, while also nurturing her family. Her kindness extends to her pets too, a dog and a cat, whom she cares for with immense dedication and love she shows to everyone around her. The black dog looked especially cute today, sporting a bright red tilak, a joyful sight that captured the spirit of the celebration. Despite life’s many challenges, including her financial struggles, her spirit remains unbroken, and her smile remains infectious. In many ways, she is richer than most of us—not in material wealth, but in the love and kindness she gives so freely to everyone. With limited means, she served this meal; each dish was prepared with joy, a true reflection of the love she pours into everything she does. What strikes me most is the depth of her strength. Didi’s selflessness and generosity are beyond words, defying any explanation. In a world where we are too quick to complain or feel disheartened, here is someone who has every reason to focus on life’s hardships but chooses, instead, to shine brightly. Didi is not only my motivation but also my inspiration, as she gives freely from what she has, embodying abundance even amidst scarcity. Before I left, Didi insisted I take one of the marigold garlands for my home. She also packed some sweets for me to take home.
As we celebrate the festival of lights, I am grateful for Didi's presence in my life. She reminds me that true wealth lies not in what we have, but in what we can give. The connections we forge and the kindness we share are the real treasures. Anne Frank's wise words echo in my mind: "No one has ever become poor by giving." Didi embodies this wisdom, radiating joy from within, unaffected by life's challenges. She makes lives worth living, and her infectious smile illuminates the path. More than just a cook, Didi is a beloved family member and guiding light, filling my home with warmth, love, and joy. In a world full of chaos and conflict, Didi is a shining embodiment of love. As Rumi said, "Wherever you are, and whatever you do, be in love." Didi lives by these words, spreading love and kindness wherever she goes.
