WHERE IS THE GROOM?

WHERE IS THE GROOM?

It was a normal wedding occasion, nothing out of the ordinary. The couple because of their different religious orientations had various platforms where the wedding was consummated. However the reception was the one where everyone was supposed to be present- a neutral ground so to speak. The event was scheduled for 1pm, the bride was all adorned in white surrounded by her family and friends all waiting for the groom. You could tell how nervous she had become, sitting in front of the hall all alone facing all the guests.

It was now 2pm and still no sign of the groom. The whispers were getting louder, I could hear people casting aspersions and throwing shades on different reasons why the groom will not show up. I even heard someone in front conclude with the statement let's have a bet. Bet? Bet that what?

I got on the stage now I don’t know if it was to reduce the tension that had filled the air or to justify that I shouldn’t return the huge amount that I was paid. I just felt there needed to be a breath of fresh air as the thickness in the atmosphere could almost be felt. I just went up and did my thing, I reeled out joke after joke and made sure that for the moment I was up, their minds were away from the present happenings.

On my own accord with the mic in my hand, I told the caterers to start serving as we wouldn’t tolerate cold meals or hot drinks. I tried not to look at the Event manager who though looked lost and distant from what was happening tried to catch my attention, perhaps to ask on whose order I spoke. Inside I really prayed for a miracle so this could end on a happy note. I had prayed for the couple the night before like I always do and I stopped when I get a reassurance in my spirit that all will be well.

Just when I was running out of steam, the groom showed up with a bunch of his friends walking behind him and smiling as he walked to take his bride back to the entrance so they could dance in together. The shouts from the friends that accompanied him were more than that of all the people in the hall combined. It was like they all belong to some bass band with their deep voices that were bound in unison. The bride had a mix of shock and surprise at the same time but was all the same happy to see her knight in shining armour.

The dance into the hall was a full time Nollywood movie. The friends of the bride looked like they were ready but the men engaged in some acrobatic moves sometimes totally uncoordinated that it ruffled the ladies and altered whatever dancing styles they had in their pouches. I think that was the plan and it worked because the albeit tense atmosphere had now fully changed.

The bride had tears in her eyes as she laughed both at her stunned friends and the grown men that were jumping around in bright blue jackets. As she got nearer to her seat, I could read her eyes telling me thank you. Heard later that the groom had a night out with his friends the night before and stayed longer than he envisaged.

Weddings are still the most glorious events I love to handle. The emotions mixed with the celebration just makes all the difference. Sometime later maybe I’ll tell you how two families used me as the messiah that finally united them.
