Where focus goes, energy flows...
Why are some people successful in business and others not? There may be many things that contribute to your success in business, but one thing that I’m sure of is that if you do not have real focus, you will not succeed as fully or as quickly as those who have.
I was watching a documentary on TV the other night about the RAF during the Second Word War. The RAF were really struggling against the better German technology and superiority in numbers. In addition, British pilots were young and in-experienced and losses were outstripping the country’s ability to manufacture new planes.
Enter the Polish Airforce: highly motivated, battle hardened and experienced. One of the first things the Poles did was to adjust the guns on their Hawker Hurricanes so that the relatively small calibre shells were focused to a point rather than the standard ‘shotgun’ spread that the British were using. Although the spread made contact with the target more likely, the lack of focus meant that no real damage was inflicted. The Poles may have found it more difficult to hit the target, but when they did, they achieved their objective.
The same is true in business. Particularly in marketing, a well-focused piece of marketing is far more likely to resonate with your ‘target’ than something that was written with less focus.
But this principle is just as true when we talk about your business plans. Highly focused and targeted business plans simply give better results. I am currently working with business owners on their Business Playbooks.
So, what is a Business Playbook? Essentially, a Business Playbook is a guide to your company – what it does and why it does it. It may include an overview of the business, how working with you adds value to your customers and how you engage with them. It will also define your mission, value statements and how you operate on a day-to-day basis. Getting total clarity around these points will help accelerate your development and ensure you get what you want from your business.
