Where is everyone?

Where is everyone?

After 18 years in business at Tarsh & Partners and a good few before that elsewhere, we are well versed in the ups and downs of the recruitment world. We're usually pragmatic about the challenges we face, with experience telling us that things will pick up (or calm down - it's been a while since that was the case!) Last month, I wrote about trends in the market, the bigger picture of tech and AI, but also what we anticipated happening in the coming months.

My longer term view hasn't changed, but then the General Election was called, and like a late frost nipping the blossom, the promise of fruit has been somewhat diminished. Whilst there are still some interesting roles available, there is less of an appetite amongst candidates who are wary of making a rash move, and hiring managers are in less of a rush to fill any vacancies that they have, unless they are business-critical.

So what can you do to prepare youself for when things pick up, as they inevitably will?

Candidates

  • Keep your CV up to date.
  • Grab every learning opportunity in your current role.
  • Use LinkedIn to build your personal brand; like, comment and share, and if you're feeling brave, post some original content.
  • Network with colleagues and friends.
  • Set up some job alerts for roles that you aspire to.

Hiring Managers

  • Think about your team structure and succession planning.
  • Anticipate potential movers. Do you want to keep them? How might you support them to achieve their goals and stay with you? How might you backfill their role if they do leave?
  • Revisit your plans and consider whether you have the right people and resources in place to deliver them
  • Make sure your job specs are up to date
