Is culture a priority in your organization? If not, you might find yourself falling behind.
According to a survey by SpencerStuart, 75% of CEOs and boards say culture is a priority they’re working on right now in their organization.
It’s not surprising since achieving team alignment is crucial for reaching organizational goals. However, not all organizations approach alignment in the same way.
Some struggle with internal competition or silos, while others promote collaboration and, at the highest level, synergy.
As businesses face mounting pressure to become more agile and responsive to external and internal challenges, understanding these different levels of team alignment can unlock new opportunities for growth, efficiency, and innovation.
At Executive Leadership Consulting, we measure four levels of team alignment—Competition, Silos, Collaboration, and Synergy. Let’s look at how organizations progress through these levels and what each level means for business performance.
?Level 1: Competition
The lowest level of team alignment is competition. At this level, teams within the same organization are pitted against each other implicitly or explicitly to achieve success. Some company cultures view competition as a driver of innovation and productivity. Leaders may encourage departments to compete for resources, recognition, or advancement.
However, this approach has significant drawbacks. Teams in a competitive culture often focus more on their internal victories than the broader organizational goals.
While one team might hit its targets, it may do so at the expense of another, ultimately harming overall company performance. Worse, it can foster a toxic environment where collaboration is scarce, trust is low, and team members hoard information.
As businesses grow and become more complex, the limitations of competition-based alignment become clear. Competition slows down the potential speed of execution and efficiency. In an era when cross-functional collaboration and shared intelligence are crucial to success, competitive cultures often fall short of achieving their full potential.
?
Level 2: Silos
Next comes the siloed organization. At this level, teams aren't directly competing but instead operate in isolation.
They focus on their own goals and deliverables without considering the bigger picture. Each team works within its functional area, rarely looking outside its bubble to learn from other departments or to collaborate.
Silos can be just as harmful as competition. When teams operate independently, they often miss out on valuable insights and opportunities that come from cross-pollination.

For example, a marketing team might develop a campaign that's not aligned with the product team's latest updates, or an operations team may struggle to implement an initiative because they weren't involved in the strategic planning.
While many organizations claim to be breaking down silos, in reality, the challenge remains in most companies. Cross-functional alignment is critical to organizational agility and performance. In siloed environments, this agility is stunted, making it difficult for organizations to respond quickly to changes in the market or within their own workforce.
?
Level 3: Collaboration
Organizations that break down silos can reach the stage of collaboration. At this level, cross-functional teams work together toward common goals.
Instead of focusing solely on their own areas, departments actively collaborate with others to achieve broader organizational outcomes. Teams regularly share information, resources, and ideas, leading to better problem-solving and more innovative solutions.
Collaboration is a powerful driver of business success, especially in today's fast-paced world where agility and speed to market are crucial. When teams collaborate, they can tap into a wider pool of knowledge, leverage diverse perspectives, and move faster toward their goals.
Collaboration is where most companies stop, thinking they’ve reached the pinnacle. However, collaboration does not reach the organization’s full potential.
While teams may work together, they often remain focused on their individual tasks. Collaboration may be transactional, aimed at solving specific problems or completing shared projects, without a deeper, strategic alignment between the teams involved.
?
Level 4: Synergy
The highest level of team alignment is synergy. At this level, teams don't just work together to achieve common goals — they actively look for ways to create win-win scenarios.
In a synergistic culture, each team is not only concerned with its own success but also with ensuring that other teams and the organization as a whole thrive. The ultimate goal is to deliver value that benefits everyone, especially the client or customer.
Synergy represents a shift from transactional collaboration to transformational alignment. Teams move beyond simply working together on projects to focusing on how they can collectively create value.
In a synergistic organization, leaders foster a high-performing collaborative culture deeply embedded in the company's DNA. Teams not only regularly share insights but also look for ways to support one another's goals. They are aligned not just to their department's KPIs but to the larger vision and mission of the company. This drives even greater agility, innovation, and performance.
As businesses face increasing pressure to be adaptable and responsive, understanding and advancing through these levels of team alignment can be a strategic advantage.
