Where does the money you raise go in Wales?

Where does the money you raise go in Wales?

Every month we will be publishing a Welsh case study to highlight how the money you help raise can make a difference to someone's life.

Welsh Veteran

An ex-soldier who served in the Army from 1987 to 1991 was referred to Alabaré by his local JCP who discovered that he had been made homeless due to rent arrears. When contacted he was sleeping in a shed which was in a graveyard in a very mountainous area in West Wales.

He informed us that some years earlier he had open surgery on his brain. His memory was affected and in his vulnerable state he was open to persuasion, suggestions and abuse. He had been targeted by local men who were using his home as a drinking and drug taking den but unfortunately He was not in a position to refuse them.

After a week of trying to help him, in October 2015 he finally agreed to move to one of our supported houses in Carmarthen. When he came to us he had serious issues with alcohol, his health & mental health was extremely poor and he was estranged from his family.

With support, a stable home and a caring community he started to improve in all areas of his life. He attended a memory clinic and all his medical appointments. He also set up a routine which helped with his memory and provided order to his daily activities. He has increasingly become more and more involved in the decisions that affected his life and he understands that there are times when he has to say no to people, be firm with them and stick to his decisions.

Increasingly he took responsibility for the actions and decisions. He became independent and assertive. He manages his mental and emotional health much better and has reconnected with his family. He now has the tools and ability to live independently again. Independent accommodation has been found for him and Alabaré will provide floating support to ensure that his transition is smooth and he has the reassurance that he has support if and when he needs it.

For the past eight years, ABF The Soldiers' Charity has supported Alabaré and in 2017 they were awarded with a grant of £140,000.

Huge thanks to the ABF for your recent support of Change Step, it's deeply appreciated and will help deliver a great seal of support for Veterans in Wales. Keep up the good work Pete.
