Where does culture come from?

Hello, Change Champions!

I've started work this week assisting with scoping the change management component of a business case on a large IT implementation.

As usual, I'm struck by how significant the critical behaviours, attitudes, and beliefs component of the change is, although it is an IT-led project.

Have you ever considered what we mean by behaviours and where they come from?

When we talk about the hierarchy of attributes that stem from the core self, the progression looks like this to me:?

Self-Perception / Identity > Values > Beliefs > Skills and Abilities > Actions / Behaviours > Environment

This one is a?reverse of the outcomes onion exercise from the book!?

The layers go outwards from the core self at the inner-most ring and the environment at the outer-most.

This is important when working on a cultural/behavioural change shift.

You need to identify which layer you're intersecting, how many layers you need to bring into play to get an effective outcome, and how you'll measure it!

The failure to recognise?multiple layers is why employees get so cynical when leaders say we're doing a major cultural shift. But all they do is look at values.

Values are just the beginning.
