Where do you want to be in life?

I was recently teaching a class, when a student asked to be coached on two big questions - "What is my life leading up to? What am I working towards?" The result - to be a full time dad.

As I browse LinkedIn, speak to fellow coaches, connect with my old colleagues, listen to concerns and ambitions of my students and friends, there is one theme that keeps coming up.

I'm seeing an increase in the importance of community and spending quality time with family. Being there for the people and the moments that truly matter.

Years ago, I left my very lucrative corporate career and made the leap of faith to switch careers altogether. Was I scared of the unknown? Of course. Did I have my doubts? Sure. But, I made the decision to jump to full time coach anyway.

When people ask me "why did you do it?" I honestly have millions of reasons, each valid and worth their weight in gold. You might hear me say:

  • Create my own schedule. Sleep when I want to sleep. Travel when I want to travel. Pee when I want to pee (sorry, not sorry). You get the idea
  • Be my own boss (I'm a really tough but understanding boss)
  • Empower myself and those I interact with
  • Make deeper connections with people I meet
  • Realize my own potential

The list can go on and on and on.

But do you want to know why I really made the switch?

I wanted to start a family with my husband. I, like my student, wanted to be a full time mom.

That didn't mean I wanted to give up working and being ambitious. That is a big part of who I am, my identity. However, I needed something that would help me satisfy my needs and wants - be a full time mom and work from home.

Everyone that I worked with, friends and family did not understand why I would leave a job with paid travel, talented coworkers, caring leadership and perceived job security (more on that next post).

However - I understand why I needed to make that jump.

I was never home. Literally, a few days out of the month (you might see yourself currently in that same boat). I put all of my energy into my job. Working for someone else..

I want to be truly present. I want to be there to pick them up from school. I want the ability to go to the movies when my kids ask. Be there when they woke up from their naps. The small and big moments. I want to be there.

Coaching provides me that opportunity.

I am surrounded by the worlds greatest thinkers. I make true genuine connections. I found my voice. I found my purpose. I found my village. Thanks to making the switch to becoming a full time coach.

It's your turn. Think long and hard on what I'm about to ask you next.

So my question to you is...

What are you working towards? What fills your heart and soul cup?

Some other questions that might help you figure this out:

What are your values?

How do your values align with what you do or want to do?

If you found it insightful or inspiring in any way - please share with other moms and dads (or moms and dads to be). Thank you in advance. :)

Americans overwhelmingly view spending time with family as one of the most important things in their life, far outranking other personal priorities, according to a new Pew Research Center survey.

It's true. After all done and said, the family is one most important thing in life.
