Where Do You Measure From?

America is a culture of measurement. We constantly think in terms of progress, however, we don’t always use the same units of measurement. Sometimes it’s funny.

“How far is it to the next town, sweetheart?”

After four minutes studying the map…

“About an inch.”

We were recently married. In 1950, GPS, internet, etc. hadn’t been invented. Road maps were key to long distance motor trips. She had recently taken driving lessons, gotten her driving license, never looked at a road map before, didn’t know the red numbers between towns on the map were miles.

We laughed about this then and later. The actual location of the starting point is important. When I was born, my life began at the time I emerged from the womb. No one questioned this. Since my birth, the starting line has been moved to the moment of conception, defined as when Mother’s egg met Dad’s sperm.

Who had the “right” to move the starting line is irrelevant. The result is and has changed the world I live in.

I purchased a jacket, off the rack, for casual wear last week. The sleeve length had to be changed. The length is not the same for both arms, because of my shoulder slant and the way I grew in the womb.

The store tailor measured very carefully, three times. Yet, when I picked up the jacket, the right sleeve was about right; left one was far too short. The tailor was perplexed. The store manager agreed it was too short. He asked the tailor…

“Where do you measure from?”

“From the end of the thumb.”

“That’s not the right starting point. Thumb length often varies. Measure from the point where the thumb joins the arm.”

The difference, in my case, was more than an inch. They were able to fix it…looks good now.

How do you measure the success of your business?

– In units sold
– In dollars received
– In happy customers
– In happy staff members you lead
– In employees you hire and fire

Is it ten miles or an inch to the next town?

Nuff Said !!!

Life is more fun when you don’t compare.
