Where do we go from here?

The mechanisms for collecting and sharing criminal justice data in New York State are broken. Where do we go from here?

New York State needs to:

  • Rethink the purpose of data collection. Focus data collection on the purposes of assessing system performance
  • Establish data standards. Consider pursuing statewide legislation that mandates the recording of clearly defined data elements.
  • Address the transparency issues. Make the data elements collected public information.
  • Alleviate capacity issues. Devote more resources. Make data collection easier and standardized.
