Where Do We Go From Here?

Where Do We Go From Here?

Political incompetence doesn't quite describe what's going on in Canada these days. I tried to make sense of the jaw-dropping report that accuses 11 members of parliament of working with foreign governments and how it impacts the veteran community.

How Bad Is This, Really?

My initial gut reaction was revulsion. Here's why.

I spent the better part of my youth sacrificing my body and mind for my country because I believed in it and what it represented. FULL STOP.

Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that a communist dictatorship, that tortures, disappears and terrorizes its own citizens, would be allowed to influence our government. BUT HERE WE ARE.

11 members of parliament, are on the take, and nobody has the balls to step up and kick them out of the House. What kind of bizarro world are we living in? And I love how the Canadian response is to all of this.

“It’s important for Canadians to understand that these names are contained in intelligence reports, in some cases, it’s uncorroborated or unverified intelligence information,” he told a parliamentary committee studying foreign interference. “The idea that there’s a perfect list of names that is entirely reliable that should be released to the public is simply irresponsible.” - Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc

We must wait for the Liberal party to follow the rules and quietly exit the suspected MPs out of their positions until an investigation is done by the RCMP.

Seriously?

What happened to all this "rule following" when Canadian Armed Forces | Forces armées canadiennes cast its own rule books aside, committed massive human rights abuses and kicked out their own soldiers for daring to stand up for their own health?

Or

Where were the rules when Generals Fortin and Whelan were unjustly charged with sexual assault only to realize there was no case against them, just a need to remove "inconvenient" people. These men were publicly humiliated for charges that were proven to be unfounded, but MPs who've been accused of TREASON, get to stay anonymous and continue representing their ridings?

The Root Of Moral Injury

I've talked about this before but soldiers are particularly sensitive to these political issues since we did the government's dirty work. If the government is run by criminals, then it's not too big of a logical leap to understand how some of us may feel like we helped further a corrupt and unjust agenda.

At least that's my opinion.

But I know I'm not far off since Tine Molendijk makes it abundantly clear in her research about moral injury in Dutch soldiers that:

To them, their suffering was not caused by risks that are simply part of the job, but by avoidable political failure.

I know my pal, Jody Mitic has some strong opinions about this fiasco as well:

Have a great week

Thank you for stating the obvious. It amazes me that just saying this is now an act of bravery. In all likelihood this has been going on for decades. Perhaps this government is not as skilled at deceiving us and keeping the truth out of the public domain? Or maybe social media is the great equalizer that finally allows us to know what our elected officials are "puppet"ed to do on behalf of whoever is really running the show.
