Where do I stand on AI ? eh, isn't much of a thing

Where do I stand on AI ? eh, isn't much of a thing overall.

?- right now its the only thing thats new in technology SO HOT, SUCH FASHION, SUCH FUN

- It will be more than a few years before its viable

- Far too much hype & FOMO is generated by Silicon Valley scam-lords who are desperate to cash out early before the bust comes. False expectations, outright falsehoods, exaggerations and distortions are crypto-tastic in nature.

  • For example, Sam "Scam" Altman just making weird claims at random intervals like "with 7 Trillion dollars I can create AI for everybody"

- its not a billable product - its a feature added to existing product.

- All products will have it: its not a competitive advantage, its a cost of keeping up.

- the risk of bad AI outweighs any early to market advantage

- AI is bogglingly expensive now, but in two years it will be one tenth(?), waiting is probably better value (see scam-lords above creating FOMO)

-?customer have to be taught what AI does - expensive go-to-market

- vendor has to learn what AI could be - expensive go-to-market

- fancy demo's quickly lead into a valley of disappointment.?

I am very positive on AI in general, but its a few years away before its widely useful and widely consumed. There are very real hurdles and outsized risks that should make companies wait a while before spending.

Great write-up; I agree with it!!! This is my current view on the topic, and I will toss in "a set of steak knives that never dulls" with that order. Even though I use AI almost every day to improve my Python/GO/JS/CSS code(with comments and refactoring), it basically remembers how to do somethings that I forgot. But yes, the vendors are pushing this like it's new OxyContin.

Well said. While "trough of disillusionment" is a reality for tech in general; thanks to AI, it has brought cheer and hope to otherwise bearish tech market. We need to beware of "AI washed" players, those who are trying to shore up fortune by riding the AI hype without adding any real value, lest we want to hit the trough sooner ;)
