Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
This is one of the most ubiquitous question asked in an interview, be it a college interview or a job.
"The purpose of asking this common interview question is to understand whether a candidate is looking for a career rather than just a job, whether their goals align with the organization's goals, and whether they have a realistic plan for their future," explains David Wishon, a senior director of Monster Talent Fusion .
We tend to give the typical banal answer which we would had prepared 'n' number of times. But we should ask ourselves this question and think practically for sometime where exactly do we want to see ourselves in five to ten years.
I'm a firm believer in the process. I don't want to get into the nuances of that here. (You can check about process vs event in my previous article here - https://www.dhirubhai.net/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6492938185667117056 ).
I believe that it is quintessential to do something productive each and every day. We talk a lot about value creation at the corporate level. But it is very pragmatic that there should be some value creation at the personal level too.
So, in five years I would want to do the following things:
1. I would want to keep on improving my skill set. Getting satisfied by life just because of financial freedom and simply thinking that now there is nothing to do is one of the biggest fallacy, if not the biggest. So, always try to push your limits one step further. Success lies outside the comfort zone.
2. ?I would want to read as many books as possible about diverse topics. I firmly believe that the amount of change reading can bring to one's way of thinking about things, be it the most miniscule things in life or the biggest decisions of our life, is colossal. Currently I have read a bit about psychology (Outliers, The Tipping Point, The Black Swan, Thinking Fast and Slow, Blink) and all this reading has proved to be beneficial big time and it's such an enthralling field to explore. You get to understand about the nuances of how we think and make decisions.
3. ?I want to contribute to value creation to whichever place I'll be working in after 5 years or it doesn't matter how many years. This has to be a constant for everyone. You have to be an asset to whichever firm you work for. You have to be an asset for the firm by doing exponential improvement in your work, rather than being a liability and just doing the work for the sake of money only.
4. ?I want to be as fit as possible. I really love playing badminton and working out in the gym for 1-2 hours on a daily basis. I find this as an inseparable part of my life. It helps me to be very productive and it refreshes the mind after a tiring day. So, I feel it is of utmost importance to do some kind of physical activity on a daily basis.
