Where displacement is a driver of the crisis?

INFORM Severity Index

In April 2024, we recorded 91 countries affected by humanitarian crises, with displacement as a key driver in 62 of them.?Of these, the ones that scored highest in the category of very high severity include: complex crisis in Sudan, complex crisis in Somalia, Syrian conflict, and Russia-Ukraine conflict.


Humanitarian access: extreme constraints

Crises in Burkina Faso, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Myanmar, Palestine, Sudan, as well as?in East Africa, and the Russia-Ukraine conflict presented extreme access constraints in the April 2024 update. In all these contexts, physical, security, and environmental constraints?is the pillar most impacted.


Supporting EWA: risks in Ukraine

We have recently updated information on four risks related to the Ukraine-Russia conflict. Two of them have materialised. See below for the active risks:

  • The Russian territorial advancements in Donetsk oblast lead to displacement, protection risks, and impeded access to basic goods, services, and humanitarian aid. ?
  • The targeting of structures supporting Ukrainian nuclear power plants’ safety causes more extensive power outages and potential nuclear incidents.

Protection indicators: what are the most reported incidents?

In April, extrajudicial executions, and deliberate or indiscriminate attacks against civilians were the most reported events. They were followed by abductions, kidnappings, or enforced disappearances, and sexual violence. Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, and Ukraine are the countries with the highest number of reported protection incidents.


Information landscape: threats against journalists

About 20 events of physical or psychological threats against journalists have been recorded during April. These events include harassment, imprisonment, threats to family members or associates by malicious actors or the public. They have been reported in India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Guatemala, Nigeria, Burundi, South Sudan, Palestine, Ukraine and Lebanon.

Armed clashes in Afghanistan

Of the 70 events recorded by ACLED in April 2024, 30 were battles or armed clashes. A similar number of battles were recorded in March 2024, while almost half were recorded in the first two months of the year.


Damages to infrastructure in Ukraine

According to the Ukraine-damages dataset, 165 damages to infrastructure were recorded in April, compared to 400 in March 2024, a decrease of 41%. Three of the infrastructures were completely destroyed in April.


Lowest number of conflict events in Yemen

More than 500 conflict events were reported in April 2024, the lowest number recorded this year. Most of these events occurred in Taizz, Al Jawf, Al Hudaydah, Sadah and Amran.
