Where did that time go?!
10 years where did that time go!

Where did that time go?!

Lets go back in time 10 years, its the 12th November 2012. One More Night by Maroon 5 is #1 in the USA charts and Candy by Robbie Williams #1 in the UK Charts.

A fresh faced me walks into deVere's Malta office ready and raring to start an amazing new career in international financial services recruitment.

Excitement for a new career is high but as are my nerves.

I've at this point never done recruitment, the only financial services knowledge I have is that I have an 11 month old baby and that my bank account is primarily RED, this is going to be tough!

So how did it go.....

The short version

10 years with deVere will never be done justice in long format as there is simply too much to write about and whilst every bit is important to me you would get bored along the way! So let me give you some of the highlights of the last 10 years:

  • Recruiter to Recruitment Manager inside 9 months - promoted on merit, commitment and hard work the same way all managers are promoted within the Group.
  • 3 weeks in Moscow for a local recruitment campaign.
  • Providing initial LinkedIn training to Trainees joining the company.
  • Ran a Company wide LinkedIn Zoom training session during lockdown.
  • Receiving Financial Training and access to Financial Qualifications.
  • Several amazing deVere Group Award Ceremonies at the London Grosvenor seeing all the major celebrities and experiencing exactly how deVere rewards success.
  • Married, Homeowner and second child born all during the COVID Pandemic.

So what has this 10 years taught me?

You can do anything if you set your mind to it.

I came into the business knowing little to nothing and have proceeded to go from strength to strength.

Have there been tough times? Regularly. Have I been out of my depth? Initially, yes.

However, as with all roles within the Group, training, support and guidance are on hand so that whatever your knowledge base, skillset, background are that if you approach with the right mindset, effort and attitude success is a learning opportunity away.

deVere is a family - a large extended global family

We're all "cut from the same cloth" with similar goals, mindsets and attitudes so whilst we are all unique in our own right and that's celebrated it is awesome to have people to celebrate with, commiserate with and probably most importantly compete with.

Culture is a buzzword these days but we've had the same culture as a business for the last 20 years and have always hired for people who fit our culture rather than tried to bend towards theirs which ensures that every new addition to the family is one that's a fit culturally and that's more often than not backed up with training for success.

The right Manager = Success

In a meritocratic business such as ours where performance is totally transparent for all to see having the right Manager is vital. Someone to pick you up when down, put you back in place when step out of it and more than anything have the solution to your problem when you are facing a challenge. Credit has to go to Lindsay McCorkindale for all his help support and assistance over the last 10 years as without him I wouldn't be where I am today.

Other thankyous must go to Beverley Yeomans for seeing potential in me 10 years ago and Nigel Green as without the company, training, infastructure he has created none of this would be possible.

Here's to the next 10 years!

Congratulations Martin, this is such an inspirational story of a successful career. wishing you the very best for the next ten years and beyond.
