Where Did Summer 2024 Go?
AJ Products (UK) Ltd
Creating ergonomic workspaces which boost efficiency, productivity & employee wellbeing.
Here we are in the middle of July, and instead of basking in warm sunshine, many of us in the UK are reaching for our umbrellas and keeping our coats close by. This summer feels like it’s gone missing, with cool temperatures and more rain than rays. While we’re all wondering where the sun went, it’s a good moment to think about how we spend our summer holidays and what we might learn from the Swedish way of doing things.?
As part of AJ Products Group (www.ajproducts.com ), we have a unique perspective on this topic. Our parent company, AJ Produkter , is based in Sweden, and we operate in 23 European countries, including Austria, Croatia, Denmark, Germany, and Norway, to name a few. This gives us a broad view of how different cultures approach work and holidays, especially during the summer months.?
A Swedish Perspective on Holidays?
In the UK, we’re used to having around 28 days of annual leave, including bank holidays. Most of us grab a week or two in the summer to hopefully catch some sun and take a break. But in Sweden, workers get to take 25 days of holiday each year, and they can take 4 weeks in a row during the summer. Imagine that – a whole month off!?
This isn’t just a company policy; it’s rooted in Swedish law and culture. The idea is to ensure that everyone gets a substantial break to rest, recharge, and spend time with their families. This approach is quite different from the UK, where longer breaks are less common and often not feasible for many workers.?
Why Take a Long Summer Break??
A long holiday can really help you unwind. It gives you a chance to completely switch off from work and come back feeling refreshed. Plus, if everyone at your workplace is off at the same time, you don’t have to worry about work piling up while you’re away.?
Spending more time with family and friends is another big plus. When everyone is off at the same time, it’s easier to plan get-togethers and enjoy quality time together. For parents, this can be a lifesaver during school holidays, reducing the stress and cost of childcare.
?
And let’s not forget the joy of being outdoors. Remember those endless summer days from your childhood? Taking a few weeks off can give you the chance to enjoy simple pleasures like bike rides, picnics, and camping trips, helping you reconnect with nature and boost your mental health.?

The Benefits of a Longer Break?
Having the chance to take a longer break can do wonders for your mental and physical health. Studies have shown that extended time off can reduce stress levels significantly, improve mood, and even enhance overall productivity when you return to work. By taking a more extended break, you allow your mind and body the time to fully recuperate from the daily grind, which short breaks often don’t accomplish.?
Cultural Insights and the Bigger Picture?
In many parts of Europe, including countries like Italy, Germany and France, the culture around holidays is similar to that of Sweden. These countries recognise the importance of work-life balance and the benefits of longer holiday periods. This cultural mindset promotes a healthier, more balanced approach to work and personal life, something that the UK could certainly benefit from considering.?
Are There Any Downsides??
Of course, there are some challenges. If everyone is expected to take their holiday during the summer, it might be harder to get time off at other times of the year. And while long breaks are great, some people might prefer shorter, more frequent holidays to help them recharge throughout the year.?
Getting back into work mode after a long break can be tough, too. It’s like the first day back at school – part of you is excited, but another part wishes the holiday could last forever. However, most people find that the benefits of a long break outweigh the initial struggle of getting back into the swing of things.?
For companies that operate internationally (like in our case), planning around long holiday periods can be tricky. They need to make sure that business doesn’t suffer when employees are away, which requires careful planning and budgeting.?
Our Takeaway?
While the UK’s approach to holidays has its own benefits, there’s something to be said for the Swedish way of taking a longer break. It’s a reminder that sometimes, taking a step back can help us move forward with more energy and a fresh perspective.?

4 个月Having worked for the UK branch of a Swedish company for over a decade, the different expectation around PTO is one of the most interesting differences. The idea of a long summer break ? is absolutely embedded in Swedish culture and every year it makes me wonder about work/life balance. It's not about number of days but the way it encourages people to just slow down and spend time with family and friends who will also be off work - it's something we just don't have in the UK and I very much think we could learn from. (Mind you, it also reminds me how grateful I am not to work in the US with their pitiful annual leave ??.)
