The US?

Overview of container prices in June?

US commodity export and import containers account 73% of the Panama Canal traffic. The canal is struggling with unprecedented drought at the moment. Current vessels on the trade route or en route are 40% lighter in load. Drop in cargo-carrying capacity is a concern for shippers as it will be costlier for them to move cargo under these circumstances. Every year, cargo worth $270 billion travels through this trade. This trade route is also a critical gateway for shippers to move their cargo to the Gulf and East Coast ports. It takes containers from China 41 days to reach the East Coast ports through the Suez. The same would be 35 days if they travel through the Panama Canal, even though that’s more expensive. But this time, it could get more expensive with additional freshwater surcharges owing to the drought.??

On our platform, the average prices of cargo-worthy 40ft containers on the West Coast have fallen sharper this year as compared to the ports on the East Coast.? The average price of the box in the key ports on the West Coast was $2561 in January 2023 and $1,761 in June, thereby recording a 37% drop in six months. On the East Coast, the average price of the same container was $2,241 in January and $1,899 in June, which is a 16.5% drop.??
