Where Is AI Leading Us?

AI implementation is on the rise and doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. As industries are being shaped by the change, many leaders are looking for answers on how to move forward. I brought this topic to Mitch Joel in a recent episode of the What’s Next! Podcast, and he shared his perspective on what to make of the artificial intelligence revolution.

Here are a few of my favorite takeaways from my time with Mitch:

How do you find the right balance between labor done by humans with technology, technology alone, or humans alone?

Any great technology works best when it's invisible to the public face or the consumer. I would challenge anybody to listen to my podcast or read anything I've written and tell me what's me and what's AI. You will not be able to. I'm literally talking about creating my own voice in places in my audio podcast. So it needs to fundamentally be invisible.

My other thought on this is that everything is with and not instead of. The biggest lesson I learned running a digital marketing agency for as many decades as I did is the brands that do this the best are the ones that are not talking about it. They're simply doing it.

How do you utilize artificial intelligence?

When you really start thinking about AI as a tool for that research and you tell it how to act and conduct itself, it can be really powerful.?

I'll often take articles that I'm asked to speak about and will input them into ChatGPT and ask it to act like a media researcher and provide five counter-arguments. By just doing that, it has sparked so much creativity in me. It gives me a desire to want to write an article about it. It even helps me candidly see a perspective in a different way because it's so easy to go on the radio and reinforce the message.

I'm not looking at whether it's right or wrong. Using AI as if it's Google is like using Google to create a Tweet for you. That’s just that absurd to me. It's not putting out the “right answer.” I would be using it as my brainstorm buddy, junior copywriter, or somebody who can verify or check how I'm writing something from a spelling or grammatical point of view.

What is your advice for individual contributors, first-time managers, or even leaders looking at the remainder of the year?

I am very employable because I talk about the future. It's a very long and wide road for me. I believe that to be a very important mindset for everybody. Don’t put your head in the sand or step away from it. At this point, the technology is easy enough for you to actually put your hands into it. Play around and see for yourself.

My other thought is that your ability to cogently communicate an idea, not just to your small cohort but to everyone at scale, is a really critical skill. That's going to take you really far. Spend time figuring out how to become a better communicator, both inputting and outputting information.

I think if you can do those two things, you’ll become very defendable against an AI overlord or somebody you're trying to beat out for the next job.
