When You're Over 40, Here's Why Employer's Don't Think Your Resume Is Pretty Fly For An Old Guy (Or Girl).
You've slaved over your resume, had it rewritten by outplacement/career coach/ professional resume writer and had people you respect give their opinion. So you think your resume is the best it can be.
Unfortunately, employers don't think your resume is as fly as you think it is, and that's even worse for your job search when you're in your 40s, 50s, or 60s+.
Outplacement and most career coaches uses traditional job search/resume strategies, and rewrite resumes to look qualified. But qualified only means average in 2025, when employers expect 5-10 qualified candidates competing for each interview spot.
Certified professional resume writers have been taught and tested on the same traditional resume strategies that make your resume have a goal of appearing qualified, so instead it appears average to employers.
Your friends, ex-bosses, and coworkers look for obvious errors, making sure your resume looks like the resumes they're used to seeing, and similar to advice they've received - they confirm that your resume looks like most of the resumes they see ... average.
But employers don't think average resumes are cool, especially when they have many qualified candidates to choose from. And when you're over 40, you are perceived as more expensive by employers, when compared to other qualified candidates with less experience (think of all the compounded annual raises).
Employers perceive that average resumes portray average candidates, and they want better than average employees, especially if those candidates are more expensive. They want to hire impact players, and an average resume doesn't show the impact you can make for an employer.
Face it, employers expect more from age 40, 50 and 60+ job seekers. It may not seem fair to you, but then again, you expect higher compensation than 20- and 30- year olds.
You can do better and you need to do better to find a great job when you're over 40. Let me show you how to change your resume so that it gets employers excited, because they see you as one of the top candidates.
