When Your Job is Unlovable

The premise of this newsletter is to help you find ways to love your job. But what if your job is simply not lovable? You’ve outgrown it, it’s not aligned with your values, it’s toxic, or any other number of dealbreakers?

?

You know you need to leave but you’re scared. Scared because of the state of the economy, scared because you think you might not be able to do better, scared because you’re not _________ enough.

?

It’s ok to be scared, but don’t scare yourself out of being happy. It IS possible to not dread Mondays. You may not be doing cartwheels to start every workday. I mean, at the end of the day, work is work. So, no job is going to be 100% fun. But, you CAN find FULFILLMENT, you can feel SUPPORTED, you can feel CHALLENGED, and you can ENJOY the type of work you do.

?

How do you even get started? The first step is DECIDING you’re ready to make a change.

Here’s a framework I use with my clients that can help: the 5 C’s to success. They can apply for any goal, including looking for a new role:

?

  • Clarity?– Who are you? What’s important to you? What do you define as success? What are your measurable goals?
  • Commitment?– Are you ready to invest the time, effort and resources to make sustainable changes?
  • Coachability?– If things need to change, YOU need to change first. Growth comes from stepping out of your comfort zone and being receptive to feedback from others.
  • Community?– No one succeeds alone. A strong network of allies is a crucial part of helping you reach your goals.
  • Confidence?– This shows up in how you communicate, how you lead, and how willing you are to take risks. It is arguably the most important component of the foundations.

?

Working towards big goals can be daunting. And looking for a new role can be especially challenging. There may be points where you want to give up. Don’t! If you know you deserve better, keep on looking!

Here are some additional tips for finding a job that’s better suited for you:

  • Do your research. Before you start applying for jobs, take some time to research different companies and their cultures. Make sure they align with your values.
  • Talk to people. Talk to your friends, family, and colleagues about their jobs. See if they can recommend any companies or positions that might be a good fit for you.
  • Network. Attend industry events and connect with people who work in your field. This is an easy way to learn about new opportunities and meet people who can help you find a job.
  • Be persistent. Don't give up if you don't find a job right away. Keep looking and networking until you find the right opportunity. You may have to kiss a few frogs along the way.
  • Look for the value in every interaction. Even if the results weren’t optimal, what’s the lesson learned? Bomb an interview? What did you learn that you can apply in future interviews? Each action is just getting you closer to where you need to be.
  • Keep yourself accountable. Whether that’s by finding an accountability partner, hiring a coach, or just committing to yourself, staying accountable will ensure you stay consistent in your search.

?

Seem like too much to take on? I can help you. Book an intro call with me. Even if we don’t wind up working together, it’s a step in the right direction for YOU!

Zandra - You have no idea how much this resonated with me. I have had many positions where I loved certain aspects of my job but as a whole, it was a nightmare. My tactic was always trying to find the learning moments in everything that was happening.
