When your emotional bases are loaded, what's your DESK policy?

The last six months have been tough outside of work with the death of a loved one in the family, losing our family dog, a near-death experience for my mum and my wife managing to break her foot quite badly slipping by a hotel pool a few weeks ago.

I joke when people ask me "How're things? to grab a coffee, sit down and be prepared for the answer!

In amongst all of this, there has been financial year-end, new year kick-off and the usual demands of running a large, complex business. In short, a large emotional and work, load.

Discussing this in a media interview recently, "What's your coping mechanism when under such load?" my reply was "I implement my DESK policy" by focusing on my: -

  • Diet (eating well, good hydration plus reducing alcohol intake).
  • Exercise (riding my bike to de-fragment my thoughts).
  • Sleep (going to bed a little earlier).
  • Kindness (to self, recognising bases are loaded).

This mini winning pattern always works on lots of levels through ensuring all aspects of my physical, mental health remains invested in. It's something that you could argue should be in your daily routine anyhow but sometimes it's easy to slip (we're all human) as life ebbs and flows.

On the 3rd of October, the first Live Better Manchester takes place and I'll be going along to talk about how we approach well being at Brother UK and sharing some insights and experience of why the emotional load of your workforce can also impact on your ability to execute your business strategy.

Aimed at bringing together business leaders, entrepreneurs, and senior managers to discuss and debate how a positive approach to wellbeing can improve the lives of employees and positively impact their business, it's aim is to get this community sharing best practice for others to implement either from their individual or corporate experience.

Sorry to hear you've been through the mill quite a bit! Sending lots of positive thoughts. Self awareness is really important in situations like these. Knowing you're overloaded and recognising that something has to give is so simple but can be really powerful if acted on properly.?
