When your dream job is no longer your dream job
Esther Loke
I write about pivoting in your 30s, small business and marketing as an introvert.
In the beginning, working in the fashion industry was my dream job. Then after 5 years, it didn’t feel meaningful anymore as I didn’t want to spend my time simply pushing sales on fast fashion.?
I went on to do freelance marketing, which was also my dream job, where I helped small businesses build their business with simple and effective marketing strategies.?
After 10 years, I realised I didn’t want to keep doing this and I really wanted to do something different.?It was hard to learn that my dream job was no longer a dream anymore and this was a journey in my life that has passed.?
When this journey ends, you’ll inevitably feel rather lost and you’ll wonder what’s next, and if there’s even anything you can look forward to next.?
?? Here’s what I learnt when my dream job was no longer my dream job anymore.?
1?? You will experience many different phases in life.?Whether that looks like ending a relationship, losing a loved one, becoming a new parent, changing careers, making new friends, etc.?
These phases will happen and there will be changes that we have to adapt to and move forward with.?Every single human being will experience all these different phases. You’re not alone! And in fact, experiencing these different phases at different points of your life, is normal.?
2?? You will constantly have different dreams.?When things change in your life, your priorities will change. Your mindset and thoughts may change, and therefore, your dreams may also change. Which is totally okay to have different dreams at different points of your life.?
And when you’ve fulfilled a certain dream, you may move on to have a different dream too.?

3?? There is nothing wrong with wanting to suddenly do something different after doing that one same thing for a long time.?This is proof that you’re a multi-dimensional human being and your identity is not just fixed on ONE career path.?
And your identity shouldn’t be just based on that.
You are so much more than your job.
Outside of our jobs, we are also a friend, a sister/brother, a parent, a daughter/son, and so much more. Your identity should be based on who you are and who you want to be as a person, and not specifically what you do.?
? Besides, being someone who is multi-passionate and willing to try and do different things, that makes you even more interesting and multi-faceted as a person.?As for me, right now, my dreams (and also goals - I use these two terms interchangeably) at this point in my life is to start an Etsy shop as a creative outlet and experiment.
?? Give yourself space and time to explore and do things you love such as hobbies, and spend time with the people you love. When I gave myself time to do this, I eventually started to form a different dream and this dream will carry me through this phase of life.
So yes, your dreams can change, and that’s a beautiful thing. You get to choose to evolve as you like and become the person you want to be.?
?? If you relate or have had a similar experience, please share it with us in the comments.
? I’m also open for discovery calls on how we can work together. Let’s schedule a discovery call to get to know one another and explore how you plan to pivot in your 30s or simply do something different in your life. Send me a DM and let’s find a time to chat!
