In this episode of the Who Ya Know Job Networking Show, we invite Briar Dougherty. She is the Founder of Career Organic, the Author of several Resume Writing and Career Transition Master Classes, and the Co-Author of A Life Measured in Sessions.?
On the show, Briar talks about her journey of getting started as a career coach. She says, "I had an early career in New York City. I went to Fashion Institute Technology for a marketing degree and ended up working full time, taking crazy credits, 17-21 credits a semester, and also had a full-time job. I scaled myself through the company. So, I was a general manager by the age of 20. And by the age of 25, I was a regional director running salons and spas within Saks 5th avenue for the entire northeast. So, this was like my mid-20s, loving life but realizing I had a passion for growing people. When I left corporate America, in 2013, I had my son and didn't want to go back after that. I had a client on the side, I was doing resume writing. Friends asking for interview help and really I kind of stumbled into it. Being a part of people's journeys continues to elevate me every day."
Briar tells us about how long she has been a career coach. She says, "2015 is when I went full-time. I had to delay it because when my son was one year old in 2014, I had cancer. I got stage 3 thyroid cancer. It paralyzed my vocal cords during the surgery. So, I had to pause and kind of start over. I got my voice back and I'm a very determined woman."
Briar also talks about some of the dark nights that she had to go through and how she got to the other side. According to her, "The first dark night was finding out I had cancer. I ended up having my surgery done, and then I lost my voice during the surgery. It's hard to describe but, you can't hold your breath anymore because there is like a little flap at the top of your vocal cords that closes and opens for you. And that doesn't function correctly anymore. And on top of that, I literally couldn't speak. So, if my son was running out in the streets, I can't yell at him anymore. Those were my fear days. I realized that all of the darkness was coming from fear. And so when I realized that, I was actually able to address it and hold my thoughts and feelings accountable. And not allow that to progress."
Briar tells us about holding the thoughts accountable. She says, "When I work with clients, I actually go through this entire exercise. It's a process of making sure that each thought you have also had an emotional response, we have to hold that accountable. Or else, we allow that energy and that emotion to just sit unchecked."
She also shares the three biggest mistakes that job seekers are making. According to her, "Number one is that the mindset isn't prepared for what a job search actually requires of you. You have to be mentally and emotionally prepared for that. Number two I would say is not understanding even just as simple as the ATS, and LinkedIn, like SEO. And three, I would go into the interview process. I would give two tips to anybody that's getting a job right now. How do you approach problem-solving? And how do you approach projects or work in general?"
On negotiating and talking about money, Briar says, "My first tip is to always remember if you have given a number at the beginning of your conversation. You tell someone my number is around 65 and then they offer you 70 and now you want to negotiate. That's not how you do it. I'm fine having candid conversations with a recruiter and just saying what is the budget for this role. It saves the recruiters time."
?? Briar - Then you ask yourself at the moment. Do I wanna feel like that right now? And when you do that your body actually answers you. You immediately have a yes or no answer. And if it's a no, you move on with your day. It's like Okay, I'm not spending any more time on that and you move through.?
?? Briar -? When I think about thoughts, I think about them being still there. We are not running away from them. We are just putting them where they need to be. We are holding them accountable, so we can go about our day, and we can continue to progress and grow.?
?? Trevor - God does that. The whole who you thing, like God works through who you know. It’s through relationships, it’s through people.?
?? Briar - Number one is that the mindset isn't prepared for what a job search actually requires of you.
?? Briar - If you’re getting into marketing for instance, you get a platform underneath you and everyone’s gonna wanna hire you. Or, you kind of create your own business because people are paying you to present their brand for them.
