Business , only to profit shall short live . Long live the profitable business that has a purpose.
Every day newspapers are flooded with news where something wonderful and great is done by? hospitals. One would have removed a big tumour? weighing kilograms , other would have done one of the most complicated and the longest brain surgery. One full page advertisement in? the news paper , billboards at strategic location in the city , schemes and discounts and medical camps. Welcome to the sickness seeking industry , ‘Hospital Industry’ , yes please correct ‘ not hospitality industry”.
Doctors and Professors are now introduced to the business terms and the word ‘target’ is no more related to a typical business organisation only. Its all business now. There are budgets , earning schedules , rations, cash flow management and profit related deliverables that Doctors and teachers have these days. Occupancy , conversion , referrals , urban market? , rural market etc are? now the words spoken in almost every private hospital and Institute.
Almost all business houses ranging from Tata to Birla , Reliance to Fortis , Hinduja to Apollo and now the regional business housed are? joining the band wagon. We have in Bhopal Bansal , Sage , Sagar and few more. There is definitely a huge new infrastructure that has come up. There are multiple options available to decide. This has lead to inundation of medical colleges and nursing colleges opening new career possibilities to more aspirants.The reality has two sides and both needs realistic understanding and response.
Government has been promoting multiple schemes and the execution of these schemes is happening through the network of these local and regional hospitals. Urban hospitals ,now have marketing department that has to penetrate the rural areas by organising camps and then ensuring conversion from camp to the OPD.
Professors are being given targets to get admission. Teachers shown on records and the teachers truly working , the gap may turn out to be a shocker. MBBS versus ayurvedic or homeopathic? resident medical officers. Most of the hospital have some or other? hospital management software but the process still gasps for robustness. The para medical staff , which is the foundation of effective hospital services is yet achieve the desired level of expertise and empathy. There? is a tall agenda and lot can be done in these two areas as the future of the nation lies on healthy and educated citizens.
Hospitals remove sickness , which is prerequisite to be healthy. Once sickness addressed , how we build and sustain health of the people , hospitals have to think on this. Putting it crudely , I mane the after sales service . How about each discharged patient , is being followed up by the team in the hospital? Patient once charged for sickness would now be charged for health. Imaging all bypass patients being called for a wellness retreat. There is a team that works on health building not the sickest removal.

Lets then compare , what hospitals are earning more from? Sickness or Health ? Lot can change by changing this paradigm. Hospitals talk about sickness , disease , cure , surgery but not health happiness and joy. Health is wholistic and includes psychological, social and spiritual health.
How about reinventing the term ‘ family Doctor’ where family segment is kept on consistent connect with the hospital data base and the entire families health is managed and maintained by the hospitals. Once s customer , customers for generations.
Hospitals - You guys are doing great but more can be done . Think purpose , profit will flow , think service and the OPD will grow, Think empathy in every aspect and revenue will soar. Create right employee values , create right employer value position , develop processes aligned to the values and create a learning and knowledgeable hospital that stays in the heart , mind and the should of the people.

7 个月Nirmal Singh Raghav good to see you back with thought provoking writing. Academics and Hospitals or health services, you picked up two potential to be reformist segments. In Noida, since I have been associated with few private and a govt university, number target is fixed for admission across course, it is business. Excellence which one gets in Delhi, JNU kind of universities, or many universities at state levels ...one may not get in private one, , their legacy with faculties, which they attain in terms of excellence through research orientation, has a huge differentiator.. That does not mean private universities do not have good teachers n students but they are missing on their experience so legacy. They have to create....it .takes time ... Same goes for hospitals ... Govt hospitals or Corporate hospitals but trust quotient of Christian medical college n hospital is at different level. One can see the pledge for services, vibrating in the air in its campus These corporates or govt just can't have, reason they don't want. Only patients, and students can force them, no one else, when they will be hit hard where it hurts the most, things will change. Keep writing Nirmal ..
