When you think you've got the lot...

The UK higher education sector is full of surprises. This is my 33rd year in HE and I think I finally know it....and then something pops up to remind me that I'm only just scratching the surface.
About five years ago I compiled a list of the professional communities in HE. Those bodies that bring together the different specialisms that exist under the broad banner of professional services.
In my years working for sector-level organisations, these groups provided a vital route to the different professional specialisms and I got to know some of them very well. They populated working groups and provided valuable feedback on informal ideas and formal consultations. Over the years I spoke at many of their meetings and conferences and made a lot of friends.
But to many, this landscape of professional bodies in an impenetrable soup of acronyms; SCONUL, RUGIT, ARC, UCISA, UKCISA and HEBCON... so a few years ago I decided to make a list.
I put a call out for suggestions, did a lot of Googling and put together the list of HE Professional Bodies.
I learned a lot. In my years at HEFCE and HESA I had never had the need to engage with The University Caterers Organisation or the Association of University Chief Security Officers - but they do important work and I'm glad they exist.
The list lives on my website and it gets a lot of views. It was finished a long time ago.

Except it wasn't.
Just when you think you've got the lot, the University Mental Health Advisers Network pops up on the HEPI newsletter this morning. The one that got away.
So today I've updated the list. The body count has gone from 80 to 81.
Job done......perhaps.

1 年An excellent list Andy, thank you for your efforts in pulling it together. May I suggest an addition - PRISM network? Apologies if you’ve already captured this and I missed it.

1 年I'm slightly disappointed that there's no way to make the acronym for the University Mental Health Advisers Network into HUMAN

1 年I’ve referred to the list many times over the last few years; many thanks Andy Youell for compiling. The two questions that always cross my mind are: 1. Collectively are they greater than the sum of their parts to the sector? mainly from a cross agenda perspective. 2. What’s the average number of these bodies each university is a member of, and the related annual cost? No real agenda in asking just inquisitive, and very aware of the excellent work I’ve seen from some of these groups.
