When You Think About People and Disabilities, Consider These

The 2017 DEI- Disability Equality Index (a survey conducted by the U.S. USBLN- Business Leadership Network and the AAPD - American Association of People with Disabilities), reported that businesses in the United States are becoming more accessible for people with disabilities. 


This is possible with regard to public accommodations and access; however, this can’t be the case for employment. 


The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the unemployment percentage for individuals with disabilities was 10.8% in 2017. This figure is higher than the national average of 3.8%. 


Stigmas


One of the hardest things that people with disabilities face is the social stigma that disabilities incur. Individuals with disabilities in the United States make up one-fifth of the population; however, have an unemployment rate higher than the national average. 


Though the Americans with Disabilities Act makes it illegal for U.S employers to. discriminate on the basis of disability, the unemployment figures show that there is discrimination present. Something as simple as disclosing a disability, can cost someone an interview.
