Increasingly, organizations in the social sector are paying attention to issues of inclusion and diversity and many are using data to inform their approaches.?

Several grantmaking foundations have launched very public efforts to collect and share demographic data on the nonprofits they fund to demonstrate their? commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.?

However, little is known about the quality of the data being used to inform their approaches.?

We analyzed publicly available data from three foundations which have collected and shared demographic data.

Our analysis revealed data visualization and reporting flaws that have the potential to lead to misleading and inaccurate conclusions about demographic makeup, but also significantly limit the ability to substantiate fieldwide assertions that support advocacy strategies.??
