This year alone, I have been able to have very in-depth one on one career coaching sessions with over 100 different professionals.
And one thing that has been very clear is the fact that a majority of them complain that they have been stuck in the wrong profession for years.
They are either not happy in their careers, they are not financially fulfilled or they have reached a point where they are no longer growing in their career.
Quickly see this >>> What to do when you are no longer growing in your career
So what does it mean to be stuck in the wrong career?
Here are 3 of the most common indicators that you are stuck in the wrong career:
- Lack of new challenges or growth
There’s nothing quite as irritating in one’s career as feeling uninspired. The feeling that all you do is routine, mediocre and downright boring!
What makes a career interesting is knowing that every day you go to work, you have a challenge waiting for you; there is room to grow, you can always do more.
But if that is not the case, then you are either stuck in the wrong job or wrong career.
Considering that work is where you spend 80% or more of your time, then it’s only fair that you should be able to find fulfillment.
And when the fulfillment is replaced by frustrations, then the feeling of being stuck can become overwhelming more so when you haven’t grown career wise in long time.
2. You are either underutilized, overworked, underpaid and unappreciated
Now, the truth is this; if you hate your job then have no business doing it.
Maybe the only reason you got into that career is because you were driven by other motivating factors such as money, benefits, the organization itself or it was just temporary.
And now years have gone by and you have realized that the more you keep working at that career, you are either underutilized or overworked. And where you are over-worked, you have no work-life balance, you dread your job and honestly at this point you just want to quit.

And like most of my career coaching clients attest, not being financially fulfilled, is one of the key stress factors in their career.
When you salary does not match your skills and value to the company, then this can use you to feel stuck and unappreciated.
3. Your passion lies elsewhere
Do you ever work at your job and get the feeling you are called to do something completely different?
I know many people who went to campus, specialized in one field but found themselves doing something completely different in the job market.
Why? They knew where their passion lay and they pursed it relentlessly!
But what about those who are now practicing what they studied (or didn’t study) only to realize that it was never their passion?
The feeling and fear that you will never do what you are passionate about becomes more intense the longer you remain in the wrong career.
So does that mean there is no hope of getting unstuck?
Certainly not!
And impulsively quitting your job is not always the solution either.
Here is something you can do to get “unstuck” even though you’ve been in that situation for years.
Get a career coach or a career mentor
A certified and experienced career coach or mentor will help you put your career into perspective by examining areas like; what you studied, roles at your current company, your personal career goals and then give you a clear road map to finally getting “unstuck” in your career.
Career coaching and mentorship is NOT a quick fix. It is a journey that takes sacrifice and commitment in order to attain the highest levels of career breakthrough and success.
