When you experiment, you can’t fail.
You’re protected by your petri dish.
Add “BETA” to the front of your idea or project (then people will give you some space) and get going.
No invite or green light needed. Ask forgiveness instead of permission. (Tip: bring your results with you when asking for forgiveness.)
Your idea doesn’t have to be a forever thing, it’s a test.
Try it, listen to the feedback, refine and repeat.
If you like it, keep going. If not? Experiment is over.
That’s what Shaquille and I did 11 years ago. It changed the trajectory of my career and my life. I’ve been experimenting ever since.
A few questions you can ask yourself:
- What’s the quickest and easiest way to test this concept?
- What do I want to learn from this experiment?
- What’s the worst thing that can happen? (It will take longer than you think to end up sleeping on your friend’s couch eating top ramen.)
Question your assumptions:
- Do I REALLY need a website before I begin? (If so, does it have to be a Disneyland website or does one landing page suffice in the beginning?)
- Do I REALLY need a sizable budget before I begin? What can I do with very little?
- Is it REALLY going to take that amount of time before I start floating this idea to the world? What could I do to start immediately?
Get messy, get uncomfortable, get brave, get going, get feedback. Rinse and repeat.
Everything that appears fancy and sexy now, didn’t start that way.
Is your idea safe enough to try? It’s very likely it is. And it’s likely it’s a liability if you don’t.
Happy Experimenting.
Many of the women who come through the Renegade Brand Bootcamp program are in experimentation mode. That’s my FAVORITE season to help guide women. If you’re interested in getting in before the early decision deadline, head to RenegadeBrandBootcamp.com. I’m scheduling consultations upon application submission. We have a few seats left.

Amy Jo Martin , great post! It reminds me of that there's no win or lose- just win or learn. Beta is a great way to think about moving forward.
