When the world is an uncomfortable place

When the world is an uncomfortable place

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been feeling increasingly uncomfortable about the world this week. There’s been the much anticipated and speculated about budget and now we have it. Reactions to it demonstrate how polarised our country is. There have been howls of protest from business people in the main-stream media, but on my social media platform (not LinkedIn!) people have been expressing gratitude that the grown-ups are back in charge, people finding that the budget is going to cost them £4.17 and being happy to donate it to the general cause.

?

As business people we may feel we’ve had enough of the endless pressure. Remember 2019? Did we know how happy we were then? As someone once said, ‘Now are the good old days you’ll be harking back to in the future’. Our worries about the budget may pale into insignificance after events across the pond next week.

?

How do we deal with all this? We may feel that we’ve been digging deep for a while. Here are some suggestions:

?

·????? There may be some real decisions to be made that we’ve been putting off. Maybe it is the right time to call it a day, retire, or sell the business and move on. It’s just the thought of letting go of all we’ve built up and handing over that scares us.

·????? There may be some difficult and conflicting feelings as business leaders and owners. On the one hand we want to see ourselves as fair, progressive and supportive employers, on the other hand we’re worrying about the effect of the budget on our profits and new employment law. Perhaps this is the time to think about what you really care about, what really matters to you. How can you focus in that direction and work towards bringing it about?

·????? All this calls for leadership, but we have to start with ourselves. What are we trying to achieve for ourselves, our businesses and families? How do we manage our own feelings, desires and needs? Unless we start with ourselves, it’s hard to provide leadership to others, but if you own or manage a business that’s what your employees are looking to you for.?

?

Take yourself away to a quiet place or go for a bike ride and have a good think. Find a really good, wise friend (not a moaner or ranter or someone who’ll agree with everything you say!) and have a chat. Do something to demonstrate to yourself that you’ve got this.

?

I could be that friend if you can’t find the right one at the moment
