When to work with what you have!

Last year we were contacted by a Client with a remote property on the west coast north of Mull. Having modernised their property and installed 2 new heat pumps, they were keen to investigate ways to continue their green journey by generating their own renewable energy.? They also wanted a system that would continue to operate at full capacity during the frequent power cuts and voltage fluctuations that they experienced, without disturbance.?

?

A survey of a small burn on their land identified a technically viable hydro scheme but as part of our survey work we identified environmental sensitivities that could be affected by water abstraction.? The Client was keen to minimise environmental impact so we focussed on solar with the understanding that whilst winter generation would not meet demand, over the year the system would provide a significant proportion of their energy.

?

The local distribution network, though recently upgraded, was still subject to the ongoing limitations for new generation connections in the Highlands.? The system was designed so that outwardly, from a grid connection perspective, it complied with the terms of the connection agreement. But behind the meter, provided the Client with the performance they wanted.

?

The system we designed and installed provided the following:

  • Peak load capacity of 24kW.
  • Solar Generation max 12kW (over panelled to 18kW for lower light / winter conditions).
  • 30kWhr battery storage.
  • Diversion systems for storing excess generation in hot water, linked to the heat pumps.
  • Remote monitoring and control.

?

The system was operational early in the new year and 3 days later sailed through its first 8 hour power cut.? Services were maintained to the property and the Client, who was away, was alerted remotely by the system to the fact there was a power cut and was able to monitor it through this period.

?

We love hydro and we know there are challenges with the grid, but its great to see that with modern renewable systems and innovative thinking, solutions are possible.

Oversized array makes the most of the light there is, when it is available.
Renewable generation & full back up power combined.
