When are we going to learn that centralized government is not the answer? The Thirteen Original Colonies began with self-government, both at the personal level and for the colony. The Thirteen Colonies moved from autonomy to the Articles of Confederation to a formal constitution. The U.S. Constitution was based on the concept of Federalism, sovereign states, and some form of a centralized federal government. The latter was a sticking point during the ratification progress because the states feared centralized power. Sadly, their fears have been realized in the Leviathan, the Federal Government has become.
How do the sovereign states fight Leviathan? I would submit that the best strategy is the concept of subsidiarity. Subsidiarity is easy to understand and apply, and can easily handle 90 to 95 percent of public policy issues. Put simply, subsidiarity means "that problems are best solved at the lowest possible level." It is not rocket science, folks. It is practical wisdom or good old-fashioned common sense. I am all for subsidiarity. How about you?
