When to Use BPMN (Business Process Modeling Notation)

Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) is a standardized notation for creating visual models?of business or organizational processes.
Those new to BPMN understandably find it overwhelming. There are flow objects, connecting objects, swim lanes, and artifacts. And that’s just the categories?within the notation. Overall, there are over 40 different elements, each with rules about when it can and cannot be used.
(In contrast, in my upcoming Business Process Mapping Workshop, I'll be teaching the 7 essential elements that are used by the majority of practicing business analysts, and are all you need for the vast majority of business process improvement work you'll do.)
If you are new to business analysis, looking at the skill set for models completed in alignment with the BPMN standard might stop you in your tracks.
As it should.
For all of us, new to business analysis or not.
When to Use BPMN
In my experience, there are only 3 good reasons for using BPMN notation.
Unless one of these 3 reasons applies, using BPMN for the sake of doing BPMN can do more harm than good.
Risks of Using BPMN
And there are many risks to using BPMN, when it’s not expressly needed.
If you choose to use BPMN, be prepared be prepared to spend more time getting the notation right on your models and explaining the notation to stakeholders, which leaves less time to think through and get feedback on the actual details of the business process.
AHEM. Yes, my opinion is pretty clear on this one. :-)

Salesforce avocated the UPN standard which is a more business-oriented than BPMN. BPMN is for the very technical and started when the aim was to model and then automate the models directly, which is why there are over 300 symbols with different meanings. Low-code has made this less relevant, so people are using a small subste of BPMN symbols bringing it closer to UPN. For the BA wanting to engage with end users, then UPN is the better standard for process modelling.

11 个月Agreed, I never use strict bpmn anymore because I work directly with the business/our kaimahi, and they simply don’t understand BPMN. If I worked with other analysts, or programmers I would use it. I still use the principles to make sure my diagrams are clear. My priority is the understanding of my end user, and those I need to consult in the process.
