When is it too late to start over?

When is it too late to start over?

I'm 41 years old. Forty freaking one. I still can't believe it. Like most kids from the 70's, I thought there would be flying cars by now. Back then, 2015 was an unimaginable number. Instead, I've aged to an unimaginable number and my car is still very much on the ground.

So here I am and what's more, I'm starting my career all over again. New role. New industry. A fish out of water in the water business. And you know what? It actually feels great.

We all need water right? Don't we? Please tell me we do.

I recently told a friend that I was nervous about the new job. He said nerves are good. It means you're on your toes. Out of your comfort zone. He was absolutely right. I can't remember the last time I felt like this, in a proving ground I'm excited about without a safety net. It's exhilarating.

That's because we do sometimes find ourselves in a career comfort zone, a place that's safe and secure. A job where if you just stuck around long enough your career would probably progress a little but on the bright side it probably wouldn't go backwards either. Plus there are family things and bills and routines that lull you into the safest, least disruptive option. Lastly, I also happen to live in a city that is constantly on fast forward - where the years seem to fly by like days and it's sometimes difficult to take stock of where you're truly going.

Now all bets are off. The outcome is uncertain. It's just me armed with twenty years of experience (what?) to make something happen. What a great opportunity.

The one thing that is certain is the guy in the mirror in 2015 is wondering where all the time went.

Great post Stuart. My advice is soak it up! Stay present in the moment and engaged with the new humans in your life. Your new co-workers, prospects and customers have something to teach you and you them. Our time on this planet is fleeting as you noted and for whatever reason you are exactly where you are at this very moment for a purpose. The impact you have on those in your new sphere of influence can be whatever you choose. New personalities, fresh perspectives, and original experiences are a wonderful inevitability. Enjoy your unique journey bud. I'm blessed to be a part of it!
