When is 'Time Off'?, really 'Time Off'??

When is 'Time Off', really 'Time Off'?

How many people actually 'switch off' from work when on annual leave?

For the first time in as long as I can remember, I promised myself that I would not get involved in work when I was off last week. I admit, I failed, but only looked at emails a couple of times (for info only) and did not spend any significant amount of time working.

It's sometimes easier to be able to switch off when actually away on a holiday, but when being at home for time off, I struggle. In all honesty, last week, I did not have the time to think about work, I was to busy on the house 'to do' list and making sure I helped with the little one. I did not feel as guilty as I used to.

It becomes a mental decision to try and switch off, something I have never been able to do previously, mainly due needing to be informed / in control of my work / hate returning not knowing what has gone on.

How do you manage to switch off when on time off?

Plenty of tips online on how to help you be prepared to switch off from work, but this only work if you follow through with them.

  1. Plan ahead (ensure you leave a detailed handover, so there should be no requirement for work to contact you).
  2. Set up an out of office email (one that states you will not be replying to emails and an alternative for the person to contact).
  3. Switch off your work phone (or switch to silent!).
  4. If you are able to, plan your week off. Keep yourself busy or just ensure you relax.
  5. Trust your colleagues (try not to stress about what you will be returning to).
  6. Stop feeling guilty for taking some time off from work. It will still be there when you return.
  7. Enjoy your time off, you cannot get it back!

Now back to the masses of emails in my inbox!

A great topic. I've learned to remove Outlook from my phone during time off and use this out-of-office: "I am on Annual Leave and not available at all until after ######. You have three options: 1) Contact someone else? 2) For urgent enquiries that cannot wait until after #######, please contact [email protected] 3) For non-urgent enquires that can wait until after #######, please resend it with *RESPONSE REQUIRED* in the subject header, everything else will be deleted without review. Best regards" It is pointless spending two weeks 'catching up' after two weeks time off.
