When to switch LinkedIn off

I'm working in Paris for a month.

I'm still writing profiles and consulting clients on LinkedIn as normal.

But I am also taking time out to spend time with my family, catch up with old friends, enjoy leisurely meals, and take in some of the amazing culture you can find in Paris.

So this edition of Your LinkedIn Health is about taking care of your mental health by taking a break when you need to. Your phone battery doesn't work well without recharging. You are the same.

In line with this philosophy, the next edition of this newsletter will be in early September.

The Significance of Taking Breaks: Enhancing Mental Wellbeing

This article is about an essential aspect of our lives: the value of taking regular breaks from work and online engagement, such as on LinkedIn and Twitter, for the betterment of our mental health.

In our fast-paced modern society, where constant work demands and digital connectivity prevail, it is crucial to recognize the importance of stepping away from these routines to grant ourselves the much-needed respite. Unplugging from our professional obligations and social media activities not only constitutes a luxury but emerges as a necessity for maintaining optimal mental wellbeing.

Let's delve into the reasons behind this perspective and explore alternative activities that can enrich our lives during these interludes.

The Vitality of Detaching

Have you ever experienced feelings of overwhelm, stress, or mental exhaustion due to incessant emails, notifications, and updates? If so, rest assured, you are not alone. The human brain is not naturally adapted to the constant stimulation of a hyper-connected digital environment. Continual exposure to such stimuli can have adverse effects on our mental equilibrium.

Taking periodic breaks from work and social media offers an opportunity for mental recuperation. It allows our minds to unwind, process information, and revitalize. Stepping back from the digital realm can contribute to improved focus, heightened productivity, and enhanced creativity when we return to our daily responsibilities.

The Advantages of Taking Breaks

1. Stress Reduction: Chronic stress can adversely impact our health. Regular breaks provide an avenue for our bodies and minds to mitigate stress hormones and restore balance.

2. Improved Sleep Quality: Excessive screen time, particularly before bedtime, can disrupt our sleep patterns due to the blue light emitted by devices. Taking a break from screens in the evening can lead to more restful sleep.

3. Strengthened Relationships: Investing time in nurturing relationships with family and friends offers emotional support and strengthens interpersonal bonds beyond the digital domain.

4. Increased Physical Activity: Freeing ourselves from screens grants us the opportunity to engage in physical activities that promote overall health and wellbeing.

5. Enhanced Creativity: Disconnecting from constant online engagement can unlock our creative potential. Embracing activities like painting, writing, or daydreaming encourages fresh perspectives and innovative ideas.

Reconnecting with Our Inner Circle

During breaks, dedicating time to our loved ones holds profound significance. Engaging in activities together fosters meaningful connections and enriches our lives in countless ways. Here are some exemplary activities to cherish these precious moments:

- Hosting a Potluck Party: Organize a gathering where each participant brings their favorite dish, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie and enjoyment.

- Embarking on Outdoor Adventures: Plan a hike, a beach outing, or a bike ride to connect with nature, offering a therapeutic escape from daily routines.

- Engaging in Game Nights: Gather for board games or card games, fostering an atmosphere of fun, friendly competition, and lasting memories.

- Participating in a Book Club: Reading and discussing books collectively encourages intellectual stimulation and meaningful conversations.

- Indulging in a Movie Marathon: Themed movie nights with popcorn and snacks can be entertaining and relaxing, bringing people together.

Discovering New Hobbies

Taking a break also presents a chance to explore new interests and hobbies that can provide personal fulfillment and enrichment. Here are some options to consider:

- Cooking or Baking: Experimenting with new recipes can be a delightful culinary adventure.

- Gardening: Cultivating plants, even in small spaces, can be a rewarding and therapeutic experience.

- Appreciating Nature: Solitary walks in the park or countryside allow for contemplation and the appreciation of the outdoors.

- Exploring the Arts: Learning to play a musical instrument or engaging in dance classes offers avenues for creative expression.

- Journaling: Expressing thoughts and feelings through writing can foster emotional clarity and reflection.

- Art Therapy: Engaging in drawing or adult colouring pages can be a meditative practice for stress reduction.

- Practicing Mindfulness: Incorporating meditation and mindfulness exercises into our lives promotes inner peace and tranquility.

In Conclusion

Taking breaks from work and online activities is not a mere indulgence; it constitutes an investment in our mental health and overall wellbeing. By granting ourselves permission to unplug, recharge, and reconnect with the aspects of life that truly matter, we foster a healthier and more balanced lifestyle.

I encourage each of you to share your plans for taking breaks and the activities you anticipate the most during these intervals. Let's inspire one another to prioritise self-care and mental health.

Great advice, David—and well-timed for me as I just returned from a week of battery-recharging in the mountains. Enjoy Paris!
