When the Storm Comes: Lessons from Chaos and Resilience

When the Storm Comes: Lessons from Chaos and Resilience

"We are bunkering down here in Brisbane, with a Category 2 cyclone just off the coast and heading our way!! Wish us luck."

This was the message a friend sent me a few days ago as Cyclone Alfred approached, her words carrying the weight of both urgency and uncertainty. She was bracing for impact, caught in the uneasy space between preparation and powerlessness. Wanting to understand what she was up against, I looked up information on the cyclone and saw how it was intensifying - its swirling mass of wind and rain moving steadily toward the coastline. The unpredictability of its path mirrored the unpredictability of nature itself - a force both mesmerising and terrifying.

Today, as I scrolled through the latest updates, an image caught my eye. It was a striking photo of young men playing in the wild surf stirred up by the cyclone, their spirits defiant against the raging waves. Just below that, another story painted a far different picture - a man missing after being swept away by floodwaters. The contrast was stark, a reminder of nature’s contradictions: joy and tragedy, exhilaration and devastation, life and loss, all unfolding at once.

It made me reflect on how we navigate these opposing forces in our own lives. Some of us, like those boys, run toward life’s turbulence, embracing the thrill of uncertainty. Others, like my friend, take shelter, hoping to endure whatever comes. Both responses are deeply human, shaped by experience, circumstance, and perspective.

Perhaps the lesson lies in learning to hold both realities at once - to respect the power of nature while still allowing ourselves to marvel at its wonder. To acknowledge fear without letting it consume us. To prepare for the worst, yet remain open to moments of beauty in the in-between.

As I reassured my friend, I found myself reflecting on my own relationship with uncertainty. Storms - both literal and metaphorical - are inevitable. They arrive unbidden, shifting the ground beneath us, demanding both caution and courage. We prepare as best we can, yet there is always a point where we must surrender to the unknown, trusting that we will find our way through. The same is true for organisations. No matter how carefully they plan, the unexpected will always come - disruptions that shake their foundation, crises that test their resilience, and unforeseen shifts that throw them off balance. The strongest organisations are not those that resist change but those that learn to move with it, finding opportunity in upheaval and strength in adaptation. This, fleeting as it is, is what we live for - the moments of awe, resilience, and transformation that emerge from the tempest.

So, as the storms rage - whether in our lives or our organisations - we have a choice. We can brace against the wind, resisting the inevitable, or we can step into the uncertainty, not just to survive, but to grow.
