I can’t do start this because too old. I can’t do this because too young. I don’t have the time. I don’t have the money. I don’t know many people and I don’t have many networks. Do you notice what is the similarity in all those responses? It is always start with either can’t or don’t which will shut off your brain. One of the key learning I had from my mentor was instead of saying I don’t or I can’t, change it to how and what. For example, how can I start this? What do I need to do to make this works?
My mentor told me; we don’t need to be great to get started but we definitely need to get started to be great. We are not born to know everything and it is part of our life journey to learn something new. Once we learn the new skills or new venture, it will soon become easy and part of our DNA. Try to think of whatever you currently do today, isn’t it something that you didn’t know few years ago or before you take on this task? Now that you have do it for few years, it becomes easy and natural for you.
When someone show you an opportunity and you are not sure what or how to do, say yes first then learn later. There is a reason why it is called an opportunity. That means that is your chance to change your life and achieve something bigger so obviously it should be something that you are not familiar or know. If you already know what or how to do it, you won’t wait for someone to show you that opportunity because you would have done it yourself right?
Besides all those excuses earlier which we called Self Limiting Belief (SLB), it is also caused by the anxiety that what if it doesn’t happen the way you wanted it? What if I put in the effort but I still can’t achieve it? Maybe I should wait till someone achieve it first then it will be real for me. However, when someone achieve it, you will have new excuse which will be, I can’t do it because I am not like that person.
Excuses are well thought through lies and there are not real. If you keep coming up with excuses, you will never achieve great thing in life. There is no right or wrong but would you want to live a great life that leave legacy behind that you have created impact on others while you are here or you just want to live an ordinary life and vanish into dust when your time is up?
During one of my personal development sessions, my mentor told us to write down our own eulogy. I startled at first on what or how to write but as soon as my mind is clear, I was able to write down all the things that I wanted others to remember me for. After that, my mentor said one thing very powerful, if that’s the thing that you want to be remembered for, what are you waiting? Why are you not doing it now and if you wait for the right time, right moment and so on, it might not ever arrive.
How do you want to be remembered?
