When should you update your resume?
If you know me then you already know the answer to this question. Today!
The worst time to update your resume is when you need to find a new opportunity because you're looking at a pink slip. I spoke with a banker recently that was holding two things in his hands. In one hand was a pink slip. In the other was his updated resume and it was simple for him to do because he had just done it a few months ago. He had embraced my theory that you write better and can find the detail you need if you're not under pressure because you've lost your job.
Then I spoke with two other bankers that only had a pink slip and no up dated resume. When I asked for their resume, one of them told me she hadn't updated her resume for years! She had the, "I'm too valuable to be pinked" attitude. Unfortunately, there are times when companies let scores of valuable people go because word comes down from the top to "Cut our head count." The other banker wasn't even sure if he had his last resume.
So let me suggest two things you should do for yourself today. One, update your resume now, and then keep it updated annually. Two, send it to us. More than once I've had bankers call me asking if I still had their resume. Maybe their computer crashed without a back up. Or maybe they just lost it. Fortunately for those bankers I was able to help. I give you my word as a former bond sales, your resume won't go anywhere without your permission. You also put yourself in contention for new opportunities that come across our desks.
Love to get your response and or personal experiences on this subject.
