When to Seek Professional Help and Treatment Options for SAD

If SAD symptoms feel overwhelming despite self-care efforts, it may be time to seek professional support. Therapy, especially cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), has been shown to help people manage SAD by reframing negative thought patterns. In some cases, medication, like antidepressants, may also provide relief. SAD is highly treatable, and no one should feel they have to face it alone.

Symptoms:

These are the most common symptoms of SAD:

  • Increased sleep and daytime drowsiness
  • Loss of interest and pleasure in activities formerly enjoyed
  • Social withdrawal and increased sensitivity to rejection
  • Grouchiness and anxiety
  • Feelings of guilt and hopelessness
  • Excessive tiredness (fatigue)
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Decreased ability to focus
  • Trouble thinking clearly
  • Increased appetite, especially for sweets and carbohydrates
  • Weight gain
  • Physical problems, such as headaches

What to Expect from Therapy: CBT can help identify and change unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors that exacerbate symptoms. For those struggling with motivation, a therapist can guide small steps to reclaim routine and enjoyment in daily life.
