When is the right time?

Becoming an Author: The Right Time to Write Your Book

What should you have in place as a founder, entrepreneur or business owner before you embark on writing and publishing your business book? Running through the following checklists will help you decide.

Your business

1.???Do you have experience in business that would be helpful to other people?

2.???Have you been operating your business for two years or longer?

3.???Do you have a well-defined product or service?

4.???Has your business been making a good annual profit for at least two years?

If the answer to three or all of these questions is yes, your business is in great shape. You know your market, have clearly defined products and services, and have a proven process. Now would be an excellent time to write your book, serve your ideal clients and accelerate your business growth. You can use your book to raise your authority, generate more leads, and boost your profile.

Your intellectual property

Don’t worry about oversharing and giving your prospects so much information that they won’t need to buy your services, or your competitors the ability to steal your IP. The aim of your book is to give your prospects maximum information for them to see that they need to come to you for implementation – something the book can’t offer. And making your IP or process public will mean anyone can see that it’s yours and you can call out copyright theft.

·??????Have you built up a wealth of knowledge that offers people value?

·??????Have you been working in your specialist area for three years or more?

·??????Do you have a proven process, with clearly designated steps, that you work through with most clients?

·??????Do people ask where they can find out more about your work or regularly tell you that you should write a book?

With three or more ‘yes’ answers to these questions, you have well-defined, significant and original content based on your proven process. You are considered an expert in your field and clients seek you out. Now is the time to demonstrate your expertise more widely and protect what is yours by consolidating your IP through writing your business book.

Writing your book

·??????Do you have a great idea for a book and plenty of time to plan and write it?

·??????Do you have a clear structure for your book and a plan for getting it written?
