When To Release Your Game + The Messy Middle Model

Hello everyone! Jakub here.

I have two new pieces to share today. The first one talks about a topic that’s often highly contested by both tiny and massive studios. There are many approaches to when to start marketing your game, after all. While there’s no single foolproof approach, I shared some ideas regarding the topic, rooted in my experience. The second one is a bit more special and I’ll write a bit more about it further in the newsletter.

When To Start Marketing Your Game?

I got asked a question a short while ago. “When should we start marketing our game”? The person asking the question had activities such as establishing a Steam page or starting social media communications in mind. However, marketing heavily pertains to all of the aspects of making video games. The answer to the question above is “before you start making the game”. Doing proper research and investing in the quality of the product is the safest way of securing success in the market. What do I mean by this?

Application of the Messy Middle Model in Video Games Marketing (video + article)

This entry is kinda fun, kinda sad for me. I was supposed to go to the Nordic Game 2024 this week, but some things need to be taken care of here, so I stayed. Not all is for nought, though, as I had my speech pre-recorded and am about to share it in this entry.

You can read (or watch in the case of the 2nd article) them after clicking the links above.

Yeah, about that Nordic Game 2024, I was supposed to be on site. However, my cat is sick. Potentially lethally. I’ve been nursing him and the prospect of him getting well has been helping my wife and me greatly. And there are chances of him recovering. As long as there are chances, we’re not about to give up on him. This means that even enticing ideas, like going to an event, networking, or maybe even getting new clients sometimes need to be put on hold.?

But it’s all right.

Chasing after money and status is a marathon, not a sprint. Sacrificing an opportunity which may appear in the future is a good call when something you deeply love is in danger of disappearing.

I’m not sure what’s going to come out of it, but I’ve applied to speak at a bunch of events in Europe and I’ll be letting you know where I’ll pop.

If you'd like to talk about conducting marketing activities for your game, let me know via DMs or drop a message to [email protected].

Thanks for reading this newsletter. See you next month!
