When reality hits.

When reality hits.

When reality hits, it can hit hard.

When reality hits, it can pull the carpet from underneath secure feet.

When reality hits, it can leave a feeling of emptiness and fear, creating an echoing silent scream that repeats over and over — What do I do now? Whom do I turn to?

When reality hits, it can appear in different ways; mainly, in two opposing styles.

It can strike like a sudden lightning bolt on a stormy night, or it can creep up on us slowly like the illuminating morning sun.?

Midlife is an intersection, and reality is the road sign. When approaching midlife, we begin to recognize reality. Reality can send us different indications, like a traffic light. It can signal that we need to start up again and continue moving forward, or it might indicate that we need to shut down and stop moving, or that we need to prepare for a change. Reality can also be like a flashing green traffic light: some may decide to "step on the gas and start to accelerate" and try to outrace the upcoming red light;

others in that same situation might decide to "hit the brakes" with the intention of playing it safe, making sure they avoid getting into trouble.

Midlife as an Observation Post

We all have dreams. Going through life, we tend to try and distinguish between dreams that are total fiction and those that can become reality. We design plans, and we develop programs, and the journey of turning our ambitions into existence begins. The trek continues until, for some reason, we need to stop and examine to what extent we are still on track and where we are headed.

Midlife is a built-in border control post. It can offer perspective on both — on looking back on our achievements while simultaneously trying to figure out what will unravel in the future. After going through the challenges of adulthood, we begin to experience intruding questions — questions around thoughts like: How close am I to where I wanted to be? Did I reach a summit or a plateau? Did I get sidetracked and wander off the assigned path??Is the distant horizon a higher hilltop to climb, or did I end up at a steep, sloped cliff revealing a gaping abyss below?

A "midlife call" can be gradual like the crack of dawn or sudden like a spark of lightning.

Midlife is an important observation point for looking back and for anticipating the future. ?Therefore, on approaching this point in our lives, our questioning might start to intensify the closer it approaches. Questions such as: "Where am I in relation to my dreams?" and "What should be my upcoming direction?". In these moments, reality sneaks up, and slowly, we come to recognition. The type of acknowledgment that comes with midlife is gradual and controlled. It’s like gazing into the distance when looking east at the crack of dawn: the light is still expected to shine for many hours. A glimpse to the west will indicate the sun is setting, and it invites the dark to dominate as twilight prepares us for the night's blackness.

With midlife's arrival, it is common to try and determine how much of life was a hike to the east and how much to the west.

Midlife can also intensify sudden major incidents. It is also a period when changes are likely to occur, and sometimes these changes happen quickly and without prior notice. For instance, there could be a sudden change of work status, for better or worse. ?There could be an unexpected change in health conditions or family issues. When we’re younger, these issues can also happen, but we might have more options to make long-term decisions or have more flexibility to make the necessary changes. When we’re younger, we might have more resources of strength to allow the going through of a much-needed fundamental "reboot".

The bottom line is that on reaching midlife one must be ready and geared to try and identify in which direction the sun is rising from. What can we implement to improve the quality of life, and which new horizons conceal a blueprint that leads to a fulfilling life? Most likely, new tools will be handy. Of course, an updated mindset will be essential for planning and constructing the next phase, which assures the ongoing hike will be suitable to the needs, desires, opportunities, and difficulties that come when reaching the high-potential years of midlife.
