- “Q Day” is the point at which large quantum computers will be able to break the large prime numbers underlying encryption algorithms that protect our digital data, as they can perform calculations impossible on regular computers.
- Initially it was thought it would take 1mn quibits (quantum bits) to realise it’s potential
, and given we’re at a few hundred now that was a long way off. But in 1994 the American mathematician Peter Shor wrote an algorithm that could theoretically run on a powerful quantum computer to crack the RSA encryption protocol most commonly used to secure online transactions. Shor showed it would take a classical computer 300 trillion years to crack an RSA-2048 bit encryption key.?But using his algorithm a quantum computer can do the same job in just ten seconds
with 4099 stable qubits.
- A team of IBM researchers report in a pre-print study
that a convergence of hybrid quantum-classical computing (HQCC) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies could be rapidly hacking away at that deadline of when quantum could undermine current encryption methods
.
- Experts now say we might get to "Q Day" as soon as 2025
. It is not a question of if, but when.
- This is so serious as today’s encryption systems protect everything including our bank accounts, financial markets, and most vital infrastructure.?
- But we don’t have to wait for Q Day, as governments and organisations are pre-empting Q Day through “Harvest Now Decrypt Later” attacks: an adversary today can harvest and collect encrypted data
. As soon as a sufficiently powerful quantum computer comes into play, it will be able to recover the harvested data and decrypt it. Think long term military plans and intelligence gathering exposed to enemies, businesses IP stolen, and people’s health records laid bare.
- Many cyber experts believe all the major powers are collecting ahead of Q-day
. The United States and China, the world’s leading military powers, are accusing each other of data harvesting on a grand scale. The director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Christopher Wray, said in September that China had “a bigger hacking program than every other major nation combined
.”
- So two races are afoot. 1. to be the first to lead the quantum space and 2. to convert vulnerable encryption to one safe in the quantum world via quantum-resistant AI/ML cryptographic solutions, known as post-quantum cryptography (PQC) algorithms.

Long short play anyone? :)
Some of the videos that caught my eye last week. I download videos I like into my YouTube Downloads and listen when exercising, driving, walking the dog (RIP Bondi), grocery shopping and any other spare moments I have:
Some articles also catching my eye this week:
- Trump Media insiders — Donald Trump himself is by far the largest holder — are due 40 million bonus shares if the stock can trade above $17.50 for 20 days
out of a 30-day period — Friday marked its 13th session — over the next three years.
- Top business schools are pushing M.B.A. candidates and undergraduates to use artificial intelligence
as a second brain.
- Microsoft and Quantinuum say they’ve ushered in the next era of quantum computing
. The team was able to run more than 14,000 experiments without a single error.
- Climate modelling by the Australian National University found Australia has experienced 20-year megadroughts
every 150 to 1,000 years and is due for another.
- Samsung Electronics is the world's largest maker of memory chips, smartphones and televisions. They expect profits for the first three months of 2024 to jump more than 10-fold
compared to a year earlier, as prices of chips have recovered from a post-pandemic slump and demand for artificial intelligence (AI) related products booms.
- New York is suing JBS, the largest meat company globally, accusing it of deceiving customers about its environmental commitments
. The lawsuit claims that JBS, like many companies, uses misleading marketing to suggest their products are more eco-friendly than they are, rather than making real changes to their practices.
- March 2024 was 1.68C warmer than "pre-industrial" times. Climate change could move "into uncharted territory" if temperatures don't fall by the end of the year,
a leading scientist has told the BBC. The warning came as data showed last month was the world's warmest March on record, extending the run of monthly temperature records to 10 in a row.
